Pattison Elementary Reteach/Retest Procedures

1. Reteaching should be an integral part of instruction in all grades and in all

subjects whenever the teacher determines that mastery of the TEKS has not
been accomplished.
2. Grade 1-5 teachers will provide reasonable opportunity to retest mastery of
TEKS when a student fails to master the content and receives a failing grade
(below 70%) on major assignments (tests and in-class projects) in all courses
that report numerical grades on the report card.
3. Teachers will strive to take a minimum of two major grades per grading period.
4. The student’s grade for the retest will be determined by averaging the original
and retest grade, and limiting the highest passing grade entered in the
gradebook to a 70% (unless the original grade is higher than the retest grade;
original grade will remain). A teacher may submit an alternate method for
determining the grade in unique situations to the principal for consideration.
5. The teacher will schedule the reteaching during small group instruction
embedded in content area learning and will notify the student in advance of the
date for the retest. Retests should be completed within 5 calendar days of return
of the test.
6. The decision as to how to retest skills that are retaught is the option of the
classroom teacher. Retesting methods include but are not limited to:

-observation
-oral questioning
-additional assignments
-demonstration
-correcting tests under supervision of teacher
-class discussions/review
-cumulative tests
-review questions on subsequent tests
-retesting using duplicate or alternate version of exam

7. Writing Composition Rubrics--if below a 70%, the teacher will reteach, but not
retest due to the time constraints of writing composition. On-demand/cold writing
pieces should be recorded as major grades but not retested.
8. Due to instructional pacing parameters, students typically will be offered only one
opportunity to retest. If a student does not complete the retest within a
reasonable time, then the original grade is upheld.
9. A label/attachment will be used to document original grade, retest grade, and the
final averaged grade.
