Double Angle

This document discusses trigonometric identities, specifically double-angle and half-angle formulas. It aims to teach students how to (1) derive double-angle and half-angle identities, (2) simplify expressions using identities, (3) prove other identities, and (4) solve problems involving identities. The lesson outline covers deriving the double-angle and half-angle identities for cosine, sine, and tangent, as well as additional identities. The document then derives the double-angle formulas for sine and cosine using sum identities and the Pythagorean identity.

Learning Outcomes of the Module

At the end of the lesson, the student is able to:
(1) derive the double-angle and half-angle identities;
(2) simplify trigonometric expressions using known identities;
(3) prove other trigonometric identities using known identities; and
(4) solve situational problems involving trigonometric identities.

Lesson Outline
(1) The double-angle and half-angle identities for cosine, sine, and tangent
(2) More trigonometric identities

Introduction
Trigonometric identities simplify the computations of trigonometric expressions. In this lesson, we
continue on establishing more trigonometric identities. In particular, we derive the formulas for
1
𝑓(2𝜃) and 𝑓( 𝜃), where f is the sine, cosine, or tangent function.
2

Double-Angle Formulas

Recall the sum identities for sine and cosine.

𝑠𝑖𝑛(𝐴 + 𝐵) = 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝐴𝑐𝑜𝑠𝐵 + 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝐴𝑠𝑖𝑛𝐵
𝑐𝑜𝑠(𝐴 + 𝐵) = 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝐴𝑐𝑜𝑠𝐵 − 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝐴𝑠𝑖𝑛𝐵
When A = B, these identities becomes
𝑠𝑖𝑛2𝐴 = 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝐴𝑐𝑜𝑠𝐴 + 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝐴𝑠𝑖𝑛𝐴 = 2𝑠𝑖𝑛𝐴𝑐𝑜𝑠𝐴
and
𝑐𝑜𝑠2𝐴 = 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝐴𝑐𝑜𝑠𝐴 − 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝐴𝑠𝑖𝑛𝐴 = cos 2 𝐴 sin2 𝐴

Double-Angle Identities for Sine and Cosine

𝑠𝑖𝑛2𝐴 = 2𝑠𝑖𝑛𝐴𝑐𝑜𝑠𝐴
𝑐𝑜𝑠2𝐴 = 𝑐𝑜𝑠 2 𝐴 − 𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝐴

The double-identity for cosine has other forms. We use the Pythagorean identity
𝑠𝑖𝑛 𝜃 + 𝑐𝑜𝑠 2 𝜃 = 1.
2

𝑐𝑜𝑠2𝐴 = cos 2 𝐴 − 𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝐴

= 𝑐𝑜𝑠 2 𝐴(1𝑐𝑜𝑠2 𝐴)
= 2𝑐𝑜𝑠 2 𝐴1

𝑐𝑜𝑠2𝐴 = 𝑐𝑜𝑠 2 𝐴𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝐴

= (1 − 𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝐴) − 𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝐴
= 1 − 2𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝐴

The identities we consider in this section are consequences of the addition formulas. The Double
− Angle Formulas allow us to find the values of the trigonometric functions at 2x from their values at x. The Half
− Angle Formulas relate the values of the trigonometric functions at ½x to their values at x

Double-Angle Formulas
The formulas in the following box are immediate consequences of the addition formulas,
which we proved in the preceding section.
