A message from the Chair

Dear Parents and Guardians

I am proud to present the annual Governors report for the academic year 2018/19. Firstly, I would like
to thank Mrs Goldsmith and all the staff for their dedication and hard work in continuing to provide a
high standard of education for all the pupils at our school. I would also like to thank the Governing Body
for their efforts and commitment in supporting the children, school staff and you as parents and
guardians.

It has been another really successful year in which we have continued not only to build on our academic
success, but to increase the profile of the school; attracting ever increasing pupil numbers as well as
visitors from other schools. We hosted another Numicon open morning to showcase how this is used
throughout the school and subsequently became the first school in Wales to become a Numicon
advocate school.

Year 5 boys and Year 2 children took part in a dance festival held annually at Theatr Clwyd for
Flintshire schools. Sports successes again this year include the Year 3 girls reaching the final at the
tennis tournament in Wrexham, winning the gymnastics trophy for schools in our category and receiving
the bronze award from Dragon Sports Flintshire for our participation in a number of events and
competitions.

We were also the first school in North Wales chosen to work with DUETS Ballet Cymru Company and
New Dance offering a 2-year training programme to a number of children in Years 3 and 4. It is hoped
that this will become an ongoing programme.

As well as retaining our Platinum Eco school status, we were awarded the National Nurture Schools
progamme for our work throughout the school in ensuring a nurturing school ethos. Furthermore, we
also gained the accolade of Investors in Families which is a true reflection of the principles and
commitment of the school to include all stakeholders in your child’s education.

Continuing to strengthen our community links, Mark Tami, MP, opened our lottery funded community
wildlife garden. Local residents were amongst those who attended the opening of the garden and they
are able to use and help maintain it. A bag packing event was held in Morrison’s as part of an ongoing
fundraising project by the school to buy a defibrillator for the benefit of the local community.

The children also participated in a range of valuable educational and residential visits and experiences
to develop and enhance their holistic education. These included trips to Chester Zoo, Wepre Park and
Glan Llyn.

Finally, your input is invaluable in helping us to provide your child with the best learning experiences
possible to reach their potential, and I thank you for your ongoing engagement, support and also your
generosity with our fundraising efforts.

The Governing Body comprises of 12 members, made up from representatives of the Ysgol Tŷ Ffynnon and
Shotton town community, all working to achieve the very best for the school, pupils, staff and community.
Each Governor serves a four year term of office. They are extremely supportive and accessible.

National School Categorisation

The National School Categorisation System provides a clear and simple way of
understanding how well a school is performing for its pupils, how effectively it is
led and managed, the quality of teaching and learning and the level of support and
challenge it needs to do even better.

Standards and the ability to improve are assessed and monitored in all schools in Wales to
help identify those that are in most need of support. A colour is allocated according to need. Green is
allocated to the top performing schools, yellow for good schools, amber for schools in need of improvement and
red for those in most need of support for improvement.

Ysgol Tŷ Ffynnon moved from Amber to Yellow during the academic year of 2017/18. This is due to the hard
work and commitment of all staff and stakeholders at all levels.

Attendance in brackets is for the last academic year which show a +0.3% improvement.
There are two types of absence: authorised and unauthorised. Unauthorised absence is absence without approval
from the Headteacher of the school. A phone call does not in itself authorise an absence, only the Headteacher’s
acceptance of the explanation offered by the letter or phone call authorises the absence.
An explanation is required for every absence. If one is not forthcoming the absence will be treated as
unauthorised.

Regular unauthorised absence is an offence in law. A Fixed Penalty Warning notification will be given at 5 days’
unauthorised absence, followed by a Fixed Penalty Notice for 10 days or more unauthorised absence

SMT have worked on G6 tracker to enable a cohesive and strategic overview of the school’s progress as well as
individual progress.

Very good progress has been made.
FP staff have had the opportunity to share good practice with other schools. Planning reflects opportunities for
pupils to have opportunities to develop their independent learning. FP staff have ensured that pupils are being
provided with opportunities to develop their independent learning.
Staff within the school have had opportunities to observe in each other’s classes to share good practice and to
offer areas for improvement. Working in triads has been beneficial to the individual.

Foundation Phase staff with teachers and TA’s have fortnightly meetings to ensure continuity with planning.

GwE Advisor, Lowri Evans and SMT undertook a Book Look and spoke to children about pupil voice and how this is
incorporated into topic work. Evidence around the school of pupil voice in books and displays. In Foundation
Phase the children’s name is put on the planning against the ideas suggested and displayed on the planning wall.

school

Final Evaluation
Strong progress has been made.
Strong progress has been made towards the Bronze Award for Cymraeg Campus. The school hosted its first
Eisteddfod which will now become an annual event. Learning Walks have taken place by the Governors responsible
for Welsh.

Staff at all levels have received Welsh lessons and participated in the presentation of Taith yr Iaith with Llion
Williams.

Increase in Welsh 2019 L4+ attainment = 92.1% (+19.69%) disaggregated 97.2% (+16.44%). Those who did not
achieve had a statement for SEN.

Tales from Wales performed for the whole school highlighting Welsh history stories.
Topics have been chosen to enable the pupils to discover more about their heritage, for example, Ble mae
Shotton?

Rachel Keenan, whilst on sabbatical visited school and worked with classes of junior pupils to encourage use of
welsh alphabet and shared resources with class teachers.

Christina Griffiths worked with Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2 classes to demonstrate the use of Welsh
through a music lesson.

Overview of four year topic cycle now includes specific Curriculum Cymraeg activities. Artists, Literature, Welsh
Day held to increase knowledge and understanding of Welsh culture and heritage.

The school sets targets for achievement on a regular basis. The tables below show the results for End of
Foundation Phase (FPh) and Key Stage 2 (KS2) Targets for 2017-18 and 2018-19. The percentages refer to the
number of children achieving the expected target of outcome 5 or above in the Foundation Phase and level 4 or
above in Key Stage 2. All percentages are including both Resource classes. Therefore, our overall percentage
without the Resource classes would be higher.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Mrs Bethan Donnelly is the ALNCO (Additional Learning Needs Coordinator) which includes Special Educational
Needs and as well as having class teachers working with Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) there are staff
members currently allocated time to work with children who have additional learning needs. We make full use of
resources available at the school to support SEN and EAL (English as an Additional Language) children. Mrs Alison
Bancroft (Basic Skills since 2017) supports pupils. The EAL service attends school weekly to help pupils who have
EAL. The school works closely with the county’s Inclusion Service and our named officer is Mrs Angeline Byrne.
We also have two Resource classes within the school – one for Foundation Phase aged pupils and one for Key Stage
2 pupils. The pupils in both Resource classes have to be in possession of a Statement and are usually brought into
school from surrounding towns and villages within Flintshire. Both Resource classes cater for pupils with MLD
with Complex Needs in the first instance. Mrs Yvonne Perry is the Governor with the responsibility for SEN

Pupils with Disabilities

We have an Equal Opportunities Policy and any new pupils with disabilities are treated the same as able bodied
pupils. The school is fully compliant with Disabled access and use as it is a brand-new building. Ysgol Tŷ Ffynnon
is a fully inclusive school.

The School Curriculum

Classes are taught the Foundation Phase Framework in Nursery through to Year 2 and the Key Stage 2 Curriculum
in Years 3 to 6. From Year 1 some classes are taught in mixed year group classes whilst others are in straight
year groups. This is reviewed annually to cater for the change in pupil numbers as Ysgol Tŷ Ffynnon is a transient
school which means year group totals often change during the school year. Two classes are provided for the
Resource pupils – one for Foundation Phase and one for Key Stage 2. Additional provision is provided for those
pupils targeted for Basic Skills intervention and those deemed to be more able and talented. It is an overriding
priority that all pupils reach their potential and our provision is organised to achieve that end.

Term time holidays will only be authorised by the Headteacher if the pupils’ attendance is good or better, meets
the score points criteria, if the holiday is an exceptional circumstance and for a ‘one hit’ request and not an
accumulation of 10 days over the year. Ysgol Tŷ Ffynnon has adopted the Attendance Policy shared by the
Connah’s Quay consortia of schools. Please see a copy on the school website.

Welsh Language

Ysgol Tŷ Ffynnon is an English medium, Category 5 school primary school. However, we are aware of the fact
that being in Wales means that we have to comply with the Welsh Assembly’s guidance that all schools throughout
Wales need to provide Welsh as an additional language and that their aim is to have a bilingual Wales.
The teaching of Welsh as a second language is a statutory requirement and has dedicated time in the school’s
timetable. Also, extensive involvement is encouraged in activities that not only build on language skills but also
develops the Welsh ethos.
The use of Welsh as an incidental (every-day) language in class through various activities helps the children to
become more aware and develop their understanding of the language and build confidence in their use of it. As
a result, the school is developing a strong Welsh ethos that fosters pride among the staff and pupils in their
locality, community, nation and culture as well as our dual languages.
The school aims to take part in a number of activities that cement this bilingual ethos and also meet the Welsh
Assembly directive to create bilingual children, demonstrating confidence in both languages.
The school’s engagement with the Welsh dimension was developed through St. David’s Day celebrations which
include a service, showcasing the children’s talents in Welsh, (for example reciting and folk dancing), flag colouring
and wearing of national costume. An annual school Eisteddfod is now embedded. The children’s Welsh knowledge
was enhanced through learning the Urdd pieces and a selection of children have performed in the Eisteddfod in
individual group recitations for the last two years. A group of children competed in the Urdd group dance
competition.
Two teachers have attended the Welsh year-long sabbatical course and another teacher will attend for the next
academic year. A Teaching Assistant attended a 6-week course. Teachers and Teaching Assistants have
attended various other Welsh courses to gain knowledge and confidence to speak and teach the language. The
school are participating in the Cymraeg Campus scheme, and almost ready to be assessed for the Bronze Award.
During the summer term Years 1 and 2 participated in the annual Welsh jamboree, singing Welsh action songs and
being entertained by Welsh S4C presenter Martyn Geraint. All staff at all levels have attended the ‘Taith yr
Iaith’ performance by Llion Williams.

School Toilets

We have four blocks of toilets available for all pupils’ use. The Nursery pupils have an additional block in their
class. Reception, Year 1 and 2 pupils use the block between Dosbarth Llwynog and Dosbarth Mochyn Daear. Years
3 – 6 use the block located near their classes opposite Class 5. There is a disabled toilet located opposite Class
6 for all pupils’ use if necessary. All toilets are cleaned on a daily basis.

Community Links

Ysgol Tŷ Ffynnon takes pride in its efforts to pervade the heart of the local community in every way it can. All
classes participate in Harvest Services and Christmas concerts which are well attended by members of the
community as well as pupils, family and friends. Local clergy visit the school regularly to take whole school
assemblies. The Christmas Carol Service has been held at St Ethelwold’s church.
The community room has been used by the Facilities Service for cooks’ meetings, Athrawon Bro to conduct Welsh
courses and sabbatical meetings and Health and Safety caretaker ladder training and Numicon training.
Parental and community involvement in the process of education is actively encouraged. Liaison exists with other
local primary schools to extend and enhance the curriculum with benefit to all; the pupils meet for sporting and
cultural events.

Liaison also exists with the local police, who visit regularly. Our Police Liaison Officer is PC Hayley Jones, she
visited every class at least once a term to give presentations about topics such as stranger danger, drugs, internet
safety, bullying and making the right choices. Children’s awareness of road safety was enhanced by the County’s
Road Safety Officers – Kerbcraft coming into school during the summer term to teach Year 1 pupils about road
safety as a pedestrian. The junior pupils are also able to participate in the Cycling Proficiency Course.
Year 2 and Year 4 pupils performed at Theatr Clwyd during Schoolsfest week.
Ballet Cymru have provided workshops at the school which has resulted in the Duets Programme for 2019-20 for
25 Year 3 or 4 scholars to have a weekly dance lesson for two years. This is worth approximately £3,000.00 per
child. It is hoped that this will continue in 2021-22. Ysgol Tŷ Ffynnon is the first school in North Wales to be
part of this programme.

The Community Garden has been officially opened with funds provided by The Big Lottery.

The school has been accredited with the Investors in Families award for 2019-20 and has been awarded with the
National Nurture Programme Award – the first school in Wales for this to be awarded for the commitment to
nurture as a whole school.

Sport & Extra Curricular Arrangements

The school feels strongly that children should be given the opportunity to participate in all types of sporting
events and to aspire to represent the school. The pupils gain great enjoyment from this competitive aspect and
the links fostered between other schools and pupils. Events in which the school actively participate are the
Flintshire Sports events such as rounders, netball, football, dodge ball and indoor athletics. We also take part
in local tournaments for the above sports as well as swimming. Forest Schools, Eco and gardening clubs are also
very popular. This year the school were awarded with the Bronze Award from Flintshire Dragon Sports for the
commitment shown in competitions.

In addition to regular PE lessons, all classes from Year 3 – 6 receive swimming instruction. Throughout the year
taster sessions in sports such as football, badminton and Tae Kwon Do are also taught by local professionals. A
Cycling Proficiency course is also offered to junior children.

We strive to give children as many extra-curricular opportunities as possible. These involve residential or day
trips to educational establishments or involvements in community events or initiatives. Here are some examples
from the past year:

 Year 1 and 2 attended the Jamboree with children from other Flintshire schools
 Non-uniform days to raise money towards Jeansforgenes, school fayre, Children in Need, Save the
Children
 Awareness of internet safety issues was developed in sessions to both children and parents/carers
 The School Council arranged a coffee afternoon for MacMillan
 Pupils attended Respectfest ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ with other Flintshire schools
 Year 2 and Year 5 received a Fire Safety talk
 Year 5 attended Creative Art days at Connah’s Quay High School as part of transition
 Brass, string and guitar lessons take place regularly by the County’s Music Service
 All Year 4 pupils received strings tuition for the whole year
 Various football and netball tournaments between local schools
 Foundation Phase children visited Loggerheads Country Park
 A local librarian visited all Foundation Phase classes to read stories to the children and promote the
summer reading scheme
 Year 4 attended Flintshire Music Service’s orchestral showcase
 Year 4 boys and Year 5 dance groups participated in the Flintshire Schoolsfest at Theatr Clwyd with
other Flintshire primary schools
 Years 3 and 4 received ballet tuition from DUETS Programme Ballet Cymru
 Whole school trip to Chester Zoo
 Junior children visited Wepre Woods for various workshops including pond dipping
 Junior children participated in the WW1 activities organised by the local council

The residential trip last year was to Glan-Llyn for three days.

Eco School

School Councillors and Eco Committee members are elected each year. We are very mindful of our environment
with an eco-club and eco-committee who consider various issues. The School worked hard last year to achieve
second Green Flag award and we are very proud of our efforts. We were also able to re-new the Platinum Award
this year – the highest accolade possible.

for promoting pupils’ health and wellbeing. We take an
active role in encouraging healthy eating, drinking and
regular exercise. During break time the children are
encouraged to eat fruit or an alternative healthy snack.
Healthy snacks are also prepared and offered to the
pupils by school staff. Water fountains are available
throughout the school as well as drinks bottles within
every classroom.

Communication

 Weekly newsletter – the newsletter is circulated on a weekly basis. Parents are given the opportunity to
receive the newsletter by email. The newsletter is also available to download from the website.

 Website – the website is a constant source of news for parents/carers and includes information and
pictures from events and activities.

 Ourschoolsapp – an app that all stakeholders can access to gain up to date information about the school.

 See-Saw app for parents to view photographs of their children at work during the day

 School comms or School Gateway – is the online parent portal. Parents can view information, respond to
school requests, book on to school trips, breakfast or after-school clubs and make payments.

 End of year reports were distributed, with parental and child feedback requested. Any parents wishing
to discuss the contents of the report could do so in an Open Evening.

 A meeting of the parents of the September Nursery Class was held in the school hall as well as one for
the September Reception Class.

 A parents’ meeting was held for all parents in October to discuss how their child had settled into the new
school year and in March to discuss progress.

 Two Open days were held for new and current parents in the Autumn and Summer term.
