1. Introduction
This document describes the methods and equipment used in static load compression testing of
foundation pile using equipment specifically developed for the purpose.
This Method Statement (MS) describes the procedures, standards and HSE rules in testing of bored
piles for Project PhnomPenh. The MS shall cover the following tests:
- Instrumented Static Pile Load Test;
The MS is prepared in accordance to the Technical Specification included in Design Document
and applicable standards – ASTM D1143/ D1143M – 07- “Standard Test Methods for Deep Fo
undations Under Static Axial Compressive Load”;
2. Test Objectives
Instrumented Static Pile Load Tests are carried out to determine:
- The Load-Settlement behaviour of tested pilot piles.
3. Load Test Principle
The test is carried out by applying static axial load to the pile head so that the pile penetrates into the
ground. The axial load is created by one or more hydraulic jacks setting on top of the pile and acting
against a reaction system.
The reaction system is a combination of Kent-ledge (dead weight of concrete blocks) and ground
anchor (screw piles).
4. Equipment
The test equipment consists of apparatus for applying load, reaction system and a system of
movement measurement.
a. Apparatus for applying load
The apparatus for applying load consists of hydraulic jack(s) powered by a hydraulic pump with
pressure gauge. The following apparatus for applying load will be used in the test:
• 7 Hydraulic jack(s): maximum load 8,000kN/Jack.
• 1 Hydraulic pump: Maximum Operation Pressure of 10,000psi.
• 1 Pressure gauge: Pressure range 0-60 Mpa

b. Reaction system (Anchor pile method)
The reaction system contains test beam (main beam), cross beam, Kent ledge (deadweight of
concrete blocks) and ground anchorage (screw piles).
Appendix I- “Test Layout and Setup” present a detailed calculation and testing arrangement of each
pile size:
• Appendix I-1 –
Reaction System Capacity - Anchor pile details and capacity
(compression and tension) are estimated from the Geotechnical data
made available by Clients. Also included is the field load test for
verification of anchor pile capacity
• Appendix I-2 – Example of Testing Arrangement is illustrated including the
details dimension and number of each member

The loading frame is constructed by a system of cross beams. The Kent-

ledge included concrete blocks & steel anchor pile (screw pile) is placed safely on the loading
frame; the test

Installation of anchor piles

The ground anchor consists of steel tube segment of 4m with screwing blades of 400mm. The screw
piles are installed into the ground by using a torque converter mounted on a excavator and powered
by the hydraulic system of the excavator. Each screw pile is installed to a pre-determined depth with
the applying torque being monitored and recorded to ensure it has sufficient capacity. The screw
piles serve the two purposes:
• Before the test while building up the Kent ledge (stacking the concrete
blocks), the screw piles will support all the weight of the Kent ledge
and eliminate the possibility of excessive settlement and instability
(Kent ledge collapsing). During this stage, the screw piles support the
Kent ledge by mobilizing the compressive capacity.
• During the load test, the uplifting force from the hydraulic jacks will be
balanced by first the Kent ledge (weight of concrete blocks); once, the
uplifting force reaches the capacity of the Kent ledge, the further
reaction is provided by the pull-out (tension) capacity of the screw piles.
During the load test, movement of the ground anchor system was closely monitored by using
precision levels. The upward movement of the anchor piles shall be within the allowable limit of 10%
anchor pile diameter (i.e., 40mm). If reached, the load test will be cancelled.

Anchor Pile Testing

Using the combined system of ground anchor and Kent ledge has some major advantages ov
er the pure Kent ledge:
• Using less deadweight as reaction, this leads to the safer testing pro
gram with significant improvement in term of accident prevention and
Kent ledge collapse. The deadweight is firmly supported by ground anchors
thus reducing the ground movement during testing – improving the quality
of settlement readings.
• The reaction comes from both deadweight and ground anchors hence
allowing a much higher test load.
• Minimize the ground preparation (ground strengthening – such as co
mpacted crushed stone, steel plates and in some cases steel or concrete
piles) to support the Kent ledge system.
• Cost effective since a sizeable portion of test expense comes from
transportation and handling of deadweight.
On each test site, prior to setting up the reaction system, one or two anchor pile will be tested
for compression and tension to verify the capacity. These anchor pile will be selected
during anchor pile installation, based on the actual value were recorded at dial gauge mount
ed on screw pile machine or will be selected by Client randomly. The testing procedure is shown as
blow:

Note: All anchor pile was installed in same condition and will be controlled by dial gauge, m
ounted on screw machine so select 1 or 2 anchor pile for testing is reasonable. Testing company
will make sure and decide this issue, based on actual installation.

e. System of Movement Measurement

The system of settlement measurement consists of by 4 dial gauges placed firmly on the two
stable reference beams. The reference beams should be stably installed to ensure no influenc
e of soil movement or deformation of equipment. The 4 dial gauges with maximum stroke 100 mm
accuracy 0.01 mm will be used for measuring settlement of pile head.
Furthermore, observations of any movements of the reference frame will be made by levellin
g or other method consented by the Employer’s Representative and a check shall be made of the
movement of the pile head relative to an external datum during the progress of the test.
Before testing, the inspection and calibration certificates of the dial gauges will be submitted to the
Owner and Consultant. These certificates are attached hereinafter.
5. Test Procedure
a. Preparation Test
Before testing, the following works should be prepared:
• Test site preparation: clearing, levelling and draining of the ground;
• Preparation for test pile head:
1. Checking the top of bore pile. If there have some tube for sonic test,
grouting them by cement or sika. (this is done by piling contractor)
2. Checking the quality concrete of head pile. If having bad concr
ete, cutting and moving them. (this is done by piling contractor
3. Covering around the head pile by steel plate (thickness 2mm) to pro
tect head pile. (this is done by piling contractor)
4. Grouting and making smooth surface by sika grout 214-11.
• Mobilization of test equipment to test site;
• Installation of test equipment;

b. Loading procedure
The minimum leave time from the end of construction to the beginning of the testing is 21 days.
• Preloading
Preloading will be carried out before testing for checking operation of test equipment and for
making good connection between test beam and hydraulic jacks. The preloading will be perfo
rmed by application of about 5% of design load, maintaining for 10 minutes and then fully unloading.
• Standard loading procedure
The loading and unloading shall be carried out in stages as shown in below Table. Following each
application of an increment of load the load shall be held for not less than the period shown or until
the rate of settlement is less than 0.25 mm/hr and is slowing down. The rate of settlement shall be
calculated from the slope of the curve obtained by plotting values of
settlement versus time and drawing a smooth curve through the points. Each stage of unloa
ding shall proceed after the expiry of the period shown in the below Tables:
