ELCOMETER – PAINT INSPECTION GAUGE

The Elcometer 141 Paint Inspection Gauge

Used to measure the thickness of a coating system. A cut of known angle is made and the
thickness of each layer revealed and measured. Can be converted to a cross hatch
adhesion cutter.
The Elcometer 121 Universal Paint Inspection Gauge

Similiar in design to the Elcometer 141, the Universal P.I.G. but also includes Buchholz
Hardness and cross hatch adhesion.

The Elcometer 195 Saberg Drill

Instead of a cut, the Saberg Drill makes a hole with a known angle. Ideal for measurement
on small areas &can measure multiple layers of coating.
The Elcometer 126 Dial Thickness Gauge

Portable, easy to use instrument for measuring the coating thickness. A sample is
prepared where the coating has been carefully removed - without damaging the substrate.
The tip is placed in the hole and the thickness read off the scale.

Destructive thickness measurement is not only often the only

guaranteed method available to test certain coating/substrate
combinations such as paint applied to concrete, wood, plaster etc, but
also the only method to identify individual layer thicknesses of a multi-
layer coating system.

 The Elcometer 141 PIG offers a quick, versatile method of

coating examination and measurement in a portable, easy to
use instrument. Ergonomically designed to give a balanced
weight distribution for a more consistent cut.
 Large easy to grip handle - allows the operator to cut thick or
hard coatings easily
 Internal cutter storage compartment
 x50 magnification direct measurement microscope
 Metric and Imperial Versions

 Can be adapted into the Elcometer 107 Cross Hatch Cutter

Universal PIG

For some combinations of coating and substrate it is necessary to use

a destructive measurement method. The Elcometer 121 & 121/2 Paint
Inspection Gauges are designed for this application.

 Battery powered illumination with the built-in microscope

 Fully portable and robust

The Elcometer 121/2 Universal PIG (shown here on the right) provides
the user not only with a PIG but also:

 Cross Hatch Cutter - for coating adhesion

 Buchholz Hardness Tester - to measure coating hardness

Thickness Gauge

For some combinations of coating and substrate it is necessary

to use a destructive measurement method. Whereas the Paint
Inspection Gauges (PIG) make a cut along the coating, the
Elcometer Saberg Drill makes a small hole to measure the
individual coating layer thicknesses of a multi-layer coating.

Minimal coating damage during test

 Fully portable and robust

 Measures coatings up to 1500 microns (60 mil)
 Used in conjunction with gradicule scale microscope or
the Elcometer 126 Dial Inspection Gauge

Elcometer 126 Dial Inspection Gauge

This portable , easy to use instrument has a broad based foot

and is fitted with a hard tip. The tip is placed a hole or the hole
generated by the Elcometer 195 and the dial indicates the
coating thickness.

Can be used in accordance with BS EN 3900-CS-5B, ISO

2808-5B, ASTM D4138.
