String instruments are played by bowing or plucking. The strings are attached in different ways to
bodies of many shapes and sizes.
An example is a musical bow from Africa. It’s a simple string attached to flexible stick which looks like a
hunting bow. We have the folk fiddles which are popular in Asia, Africa, and Europe in which some have up to six
strings. We also have our own example here in the Philippines, our native fiddle, the “litguit” which is made of
bamboo.
- Viol = six strings used in concerts or small gatherings, soft delicate sound, between the knees
- Violin = four strings, chin rest, f shaped sound holes, fingerboard and pegs, brilliant dramatic tones
- Antonio Stradivari = a great violin maker
- Viola = looks like a violin, sound lower darker and less brilliant, alto of the string family
- Violencello = broad and mellow, tenor, legs and neck
