Classification: Antibiotic that interferes with cytochrome P-450 activity to decrease ergosterol synthesis and inhibit fungal cell membrane formation.
Indication: Treatment of nonlife-threatening Candida infections. Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to fluconazole or other azoles or those receiving concomitant terfenadine.
Side Effects: Headache, hepatoxicity, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting.
Nursing Responsibilities: Monitor infected areas and CSF cultures before and during therapy. Monitor BUN and serum creatinine before and periodically during therapy. Assess for side effects.
