Adapted program
It is competitive or recreational program / sports for people with
disabilities.
It often run parallel to typical sport activities.
It allow modifications necessary for people with disabilities to
participate and many sports use a classification system that puts
athletes with physical challenges on an even playing field with each
other.
In this program, Athletes with disabilities may play different versions of
the same sports,

Nature and scope of The Adapted Program


The adapted program refers to that phase of physical education
program designed to meet the needs of individual children who deviate from
normal. These are the children who have some physical inadequacy,
functional defects which are capable of being improved through exercises, or
other forms of deficiency who may be temporarily or permanently unable to
take part in the regular physical education program
The democratization of access to education gives the right of every individual
to a good education. This thrust of the government gives much emphasis to the
observance of the principle of individual differences caused by such factor as
heredity, environment, disease, accident, or other reason resulting to physical or
other impairment. Special provisions should be made in the schools to help these
children who may find difficulty in adjusting to the demands that society places on
them. A sound Adapted Program should represent the challenge for the teacher to
see it that every child in his class attains optimum physical, social, emotional, and
mental fitness through pleasurable physical activities adapted to his needs.
Adapted physical education program is a program of activities, games, sports,
and rhythm suited to the interests, capacities and limitations of children with
disabilities who may not safely or successfully engage in unrestricted participation in
the general program of physical education (JOPHER, 1962). It offers the individual

the opportunity for optimum development and the maintenance of physical fitness. It
provides opportunities for facilitating normal growth of the child. It helps to prevent
the reversal of growth of the child. It helps to prevent the reversal of such factors as
strength, cardio-vascular endurance flexibility and skill.
Children’s participation in the regular physical education program is most
frequently prohibited by the following handicapping conditions:

Orthopedic handicap
Poor Body mechanism
Cardio-vascular conditions
Visual handicaps
Auditory handicap
Other traumatic, pathological, and congenital conditions.

OBJECTIVES OF THE ADAPTED PROGRAM


To develop trust, learn acceptable behaviors and sharpen cognitive
skills.
To increase participant’s physical activities, strength, endurance and
range of motion.
To promote self-actualization, this in turn promotes optimal personal
development and contributes to the whole of society.
To provide diversified innovative sports that encourages individuals
with disabilities of all ages to participate in sports that increases hand-
eye coordination, strength and endurance as well as the quality of life
by developing good sportsmanship skills, team building skills and
character in a therapeutic recreation environment.
To expands participant’s intrapersonal relationships and social skills.
To build participant’s self-esteem and self-confidence.

a. Those desiring to rehabilitate a physical disability.
b. Those desiring to adapt to a permanent disability.
c. Those requiring a limited physical activity program.
d. Those requiring a developmental program.
