ANALYSIS OF ENVIRONMENTAL DATA :- CHUNABHATTI SLUMS

Ward No. – 53 , Panchsheel Nagar

Municipality Name – Bhopal
Pin code – 462042
District - Bhopal

1.1 INTRODUCTION

Slums are a physical and spatial sign of urban poverty. Individuals living in slums have next to
zero access to administrations. Basically slums are informal settlements over the government
roads. Slum is an unhealthy area where basic amenities like water supply, drainage for standard
living are lacking, unsanitary conditions prevail and diseases flourish. Slums have legal owner of
its land. The ownership may be public, organizational or private.

The major result of this study survey is to provide the information of current sanitation condition
of chunabhatti slums and important measures should be taken for their improvement. Chunabhatti
slum hold a population of 392 households and a population about 3000 .

1.2 RESULTS

Sources of Water in the Study Area:-

Water is used for not only drinking also for another purpose such as bathing, cooking, washing
etc. This water is collected from public water lined connections bore- well, tube-well etc. No tap
water service is exists here and no public stand post in that area as there is no need for these
households are satisfied by their current water supply sources. Water storage tanks are not
available in the area during harsh summer season , if piped water supply unable to fulfill water
requirements then there is no backup option in the area . most of the water connections are metered
in the study area.

Drinking Water Quality (lab analysis):-

As Chunabhatti slums are near shahpura lake then contamination of shahpura lake water also
affects the groundwater of chunabhatti area . Households using bore-well or tube-well may have
disturbed value of PH levels of water. There is no water treatment plant available in the study area.
Utility Service Facilities:-

Without water supply and sanitation services there are more utility services are needed to provide
in a housing system such as electricity, open spaces, garbage disposal, access roads, drainage,
health services etc. in khora’s slum all utilities are not provided here but some are provided. The
existing condition of utilities are providing in the Table 1.

Name of Utility YES (%) NO(%) Remarks

Open Space Not available Not available All legal
Toilet 90 10
Garbage disposal 88 12 Without proper
sanitation
Access road 81 19
Drainage Lined drains Lined drains
Health 60 40 Lack of hospitals.

Drainage Facilities:-

Almost all the drains are lined in the study area . so sanitation condition of these is satisfactory .
Study area is not prone to Water logging due to proper lined drains and high elevation contour.

Waste Disposal:-

It is calculated from the study that highest number of households have dustbins in their houses and
door to door service is available . But there is no community dustbins in the area so this results in
open disposal of garbage sometimes in vacant plots.
WASTE DISPOSAL

10%

30% dustbins
60%
door to door garbage
open dumping

Health Facilities:-

There is a dispensary nearby the slum. Most of the people go there for medicine . A hospital is
about 400m away but the expense is high and the doctors don’t care them well. From the basic
need, health is an important facility is very important for human both urban and rural area. Health
awareness progremmes are conducted atleast once in a month for awareness of households.

Environmental conditions:-

The major environmental problems created by the informal settlers such as; the population
overcrowding in the study area due to narrow width of roads , noise pollution and waste pollution
of the study area.

Absence of recreational facilities:-

The occupational life of the majority of slum dwellers is such that they find very little time for
recreation. There is no time available for leisure in the daily routine of their life. Young children
suffered from lack of recreation. In the study area there is a great lack or provision of parks and
playgrounds. As a result people deprived from mental refreshment.
Conclusion:-

The study of the area shows that environmental conditions of the area are satisfactory but can be
better . Lack of community dustbins , more number of reasonable health centres , and pollution
control are the basic problems need to be solved .
