THE VISUAL STORY: CLAYMATION

One of the most exciting and interesting forms of art is the visual story told through moving images. The
history of film and television grew from a desire to present an image in motion. We are going to explore
and create a 5-10 second stop motion film inspired by that same visual history. The topic for this
story can be one of two things:
A. Bullying B. Historical Moment C. Approved Scenario

For this project you will need the following materials:

Materials Y/N

1. Clay (grey clay provided by the teacher) ________

2. A shoebox (provided by the student[s]) ________
3. Materials for decorating backdrop (student) ________
4. A drawn out storyboard (teacher/student) ________
5. A digital camera (teacher) ________
6. A group of two-three students ________

My group name is: _______________________

1. _______________________ 2. _________________________ 3. _________________

The project is divided into three different parts, each with different responsibilities. Students can share
the work and the grade for all three, or they can divide up the work and receive grades for their
individual contribution.

SECTION TITLE Person responsible (if shared, write shared)

1. Story and Storyboard: ____________________

a. This section requires students to use the attached storyboard sheet and draw out
(sketch) 9-12 different parts of the story. The actual story should only be 4-5 sentences
long (because the actual film is only 5-10 seconds long).
b. Storyboard should be drawn moment to moment and does not have to include each and
every action (see examples on the board).

2. Background: ____________________
a. This section requires students to use the shoebox and any other materials they possess
to create a background that goes along with the characters (think of dioramas in
elementary school).
b. Backgrounds can be simple drawings, paintings, etc. or include 3D items from home, or
collaged materials.

3. Claymation Characters (2-3): ____________________

a. Characters do not have to be complex, but must be different from each other and have
personality details (eyes, nose, hair, moustache, etc.)
b. Characters can be people, animals, or inanimate objects.
