No. of levels (including ground floor) : 3
Average level height : 6 m
2
Floor Area : 8500 m
2
Exterior building wall area per floor : 700 m
Wall Tightness : 2 (1=Tight, 2=Average, 3=Loose, 4=Very Loose)
Stairwell wall area per floor : 16 m2
Wall Tightness : 2 (1=Tight, 2=Average, 3=Loose)
Elevator shaft walls : 14 m2
Wall Tightness : 2 (1=Tight, 2=Average, 3=Loose)
The area gap around each stairwell door : 0.024 m2
Outside design temperature : 40.5 deg C
Stairwell temperature : 35 deg C

Stairwell door width : 1 m

Stairwell door height : 2.1 m
Force to overcome door closer : 53 N
Distance from door knob to
edge of knob side of door : 75 mm

Assumptions:
The pressure difference between stairwell
and building at stairwell bottom : 20 Pa

Critical Velocity : 1.524 m/s

Height Limit Check:

Maximum allowable pressure difference

between the stairwell and the building = 70.476 Pa

Height limit below which satisfactory

pressurization is possible = 303.2 m

Calculations:
Abo Flow area between the building and outside per floor = 0.147 m2
Asb Flow area between stairwell and the building per floor = 0.026 m2

B Pressure difference per height due to stack effect = 0.197 Pa/m

Psb Pressure difference between stairwell top and the building = 23.44 Pa

Simple stairwell pressurization:

Q Flow rate of the pressurization air = 0.302 m3/s (= 639.737452 cfm)

Canadian stairwell pressurization:

In this system, an exterior stairwell door opens automatically upon system activation. In addition,
the lower two floors will be considered opened, while the others doors will be considered closed

I. Opened doors section:

Pressure difference at the bottom of the section = 20 Pa
Pressure difference at the top of the section = 22.295 Pa
Flow factor = 3.8555 m/s
2
Open stairwell flow area = 0.8528 m
2
Effective flow area = 0.1449 m
3
Flow rate from this section = 1.117 m /s (= 2366.86097 cfm)

II. Closed doors section:

Pressure difference at the bottom of the section = 22.979 Pa
Pressure difference at the top of the section = 24.162 Pa
Flow factor = 4.0708 m/s
2
Effective flow area = 0.026 m
Flow rate from this section = 0.1049 m3/s (= 222.191571 cfm)

III. Exterior stairwell door:

Pressure difference at the exterior door
(~ at 1.5m height) = 20.91 Pa
2
Open exterior stairwell door effective flow area = 0.8528 m
Flow rate from this section = 3.2724 m3/s (= 6933.78697 cfm)

The total flow needed to pressurize the stairwell

at the above conditions is the sum of these three
separate flows = 1.117 + 0.105 + 3.27238304
3
= 4.4943 m /s

(= 9523 cfm)
