TWO TYPES OF FESTIVAL


A. RELIGIOUS OR NON SECULAR – festivals that honor saints and patrons.
B. SECULAR- festivals that are celebrated in thanks giving for a bountiful harvest.

Objectives:
 Promote Nationalism and Patriotism through the studying of our dances.
 Maintain the genuine folk dance and music to the different regions of our country.

Common Philippine Folk Dance


TINIKLING Derived from the long-legged phil. Bird called “Tikling” trapped from the
bamboo poles.
CARINOSA (meaning the loving or affectionate one) a courtship dance that portrays
acts of flirtation between a man and a woman. The dancers perform steps
resembling hide and seek movements.
PANDANGO SA A dance which requires a skill in balancing three oil lamps and usually
ILAW accompanied by castanets.
MAGLALATIK A mock war dance that depicts a fight over a coconut meat, a highly-prized
food.
SINGKIL A Maranao dance performed by a single woman (Princess) to attract the
potential suitors, wearing bell anklets as she leaps in and out of the criss-
crossed bamboo poles.
SAYAW SA A famous Phil. Folk dance in which the dancers must use good skill and
BANGKO balance as they dance on top of a narrow bench.

II. Performance Standard


Leads dance events with proficiency and confidence resulting in independent pursuit and
in influencing others positively.

At the end of the lesson the learners should be able to:
 Understand cultural roots of Philippine Folk Dance.
 Execute the different Philippine Folk Dance.

FESTIVAL DANCE – These dances are suitable for special occasions and festivities.

Common Philippine Festival Dance


Is the Festival consist of Tribal Dance, Music, Accompanied by indigenous costumes and weapon,
ATI-ATIHAN and parade along the street. Is a feast held annually in January in honor of the Santo-Niño (Infant
FESTIVAL Jesus) in Kalibo, Aklan. Ati-atihan Means “to be like Atis” or “to make believe Atis” the local name for
the Aeta.
The word “Sinulog” comes from the Cebuano adverb “SULOG” means “like water current
SINULOG movement”, it describes the backward-forward movement of the dance. Sinulog is the ritual prayer-
FESTIVAL dance honoring Senor Santo-Nino (Child Jesus) in Cebu. It Is one of the Grandest and most Colorful
Festivals in the phil.
English (FLOWER FESTIVAL), Most commonly known as the flower Festival of phil. Is celebrated
PANAGBENGA every year in the flower city of Baguio. The Festival consist of many Exciting events including Floral
FESTIVAL exhibition, Tours to the Gardens, Parade of floats and Performances of bands.
The Pintados Festival of Tacloban city is a Filipino Festival with it’s own unique flavor. This Pintados
PINTADOS recalls pre- Spanish history of the native Leytenos from wars, epics and Folk Religions. Pintados
FESTIVAL Festive Dancers, painted from head to toe with designs that look like armor.
Is one of the most popular festival in the phil.and it is a week long celebration that kick off with
MASSKARA mask-making contest, food fairs, brass band, competitions, beauty and talent pageants. Mass
FESTIVAL meaning is (Many) or (Multitude) and kara it means “Face” Masskara is also mascara the dialect for
the English word.
