 The Bowline

o The bowline creates a loop at the end of a rope that cannot shrink or expand. This
knot is often taught and illustrated with a poem of a rabbit coming out of the hole,
hopping in front of a tree, going behind the tree, and back down his original hole.

 Clove Hitch

o The Clove Hitch is an easy knot to tie, and it secures a line to a tree or post quickly,
but it does slip when used alone, without any other knots as a backup.

 Constrictor Knot

o The constrictor knot, also known as the Gunner’s knot, is a strong knot used for
binding and whipping purposes. The simple knot though thought to be around since
long before, gained wide recognition after being published in The Ashley Book of
Knots in 1944. It is very difficult to untie and might need the rope to be cut for
release.

 Double Fisherman’s Knot

o The double fisherman's knot or grapevine knot is a bend. This knot and the triple
fisherman's knot are the variations used most often in climbing, arboriculture, and
search and rescue. The knot is formed by tying a double overhand knot, in its strangle
knot form, with each end around the opposite line's standing part.
 Figure Eight

o The figure-eight knot or figure-of-eight knot is a type of stopper knot. It is very

important in both sailing and rock climbing as a method of stopping ropes from
running out of retaining devices. The figure-eight knot or figure-of-eight knot is a

 Half Hitch

o The half hitch is a simple overhand knot, where the working end of a line is
brought over and under the standing part. Insecure on its own, it is a valuable
component of a wide variety of useful and reliable hitches, bends, and knots.

 Sheet Bend

o The sheet bend is a bend. It is practical for joining lines of different diameter or
rigidity. It is quick and easy to tie, and is considered so essential it is the first knot
given in the Ashley Book of Knots.

 Square Knot

o The reef knot, or square knot, is an ancient and simple binding knot used to secure
a rope or line around an object. It is sometimes also referred to as a Hercules knot.
The knot is formed by tying a left-handed overhand knot and then a right-handed
overhand knot, or vice versa.
 Tautline Hitch

o The taut-line hitch is an adjustable loop knot for use on lines under tension. It is
useful when the length of a line will need to be periodically adjusted in order to
maintain tension. It is made by tying a rolling hitch around the standing part after
passing around an anchor object.

 Trucker’s Hitch

o The trucker's hitch is a compound knot commonly used for securing loads on
trucks or trailers. This general arrangement, using loops and turns in the rope
itself to form a crude block and tackle, has long been used to tension lines and is
known by multiple names.
