V.

Justification

The data generated in the comparison of the results between the Grouping Method and

the use of Graphing Paper and a Pen in factoring quadratic trinomial when the leading coefficient

is not equal to 1 is presented in table 1. For every quadratic trinomial, the results of factoring using

both methods are exactly the same regardless of whatever case the given polynomial belongs.

Through these data, the investigators were able to justify that the use of Graphing Paper

and a Pen can give the solver the right factors of the quadratic trinomial in the form ax2 + bx + c

where the leading coefficient is greater than 1. Moreover, it was proven that the level of difficulties

in using this method is lower than that of the usual method the students use.

VI. Summary

The investigator conducted a study on whether the use of the graphing paper and a pen

can be done to determine the right factors of the quadratic trinomial in the form ax2 + bx + c where

the leading coefficient is greater than 1. After identifying the complexities of the problem, the

investigators tested the instrument of the study which is a set quadratic trinomials in the said form

belonging to the identified cases. The results garnered in factoring this set of trinomials were

compared to the results gained in factoring the same set using the old method of doing this

process which is the Grouping Method. After a careful analysis of the results, the investigators

came up with the conclusion that use of Graphing Paper and a Pen is an effective method of

factoring a quadratic trinomial.

VII. Possible Extensions

Factors are the number or expressions that when multiplied result to another

number or expression called the product. In the same manner, in factoring the quadratic
trinomial the said trinomial serves as the product when the two factors are multiplied.

Since the use of graphing paper and a pen was proven to be effective in finding the factor

of the quadratic trinomial, basically, it can also be used to determine the product of two

binomials.

Furthermore, the Division Algorithm states that the dividend is equal to the product

of the divisor and the quotient plus the remainder. There is no remainder involve in

factoring quadratic trinomial. In similar situation, we can conclude that one of the factor is

equal to the quotient of the quadratic trinomial and the other factor. Through this, we can

assume that the use of graphing paper and a pen can also be done in finding the quotient

of the quadratic trinomial provided that the given trinomial is factorable.

It is recommended that similar investigation or study should be conducted to verify

these assumptions.
