There are two emerging technologies which are helping to close the digital divide.

They
are the internet and cell phones. The internet is the way of the world today. In almost everything
we do, we use the Internet. Ordering a pizza, buying a television, sharing a moment with a
friend, and even sending a picture over instant messaging. Before the Internet, if you wanted to
keep up with the news, you had to walk down to the newsstand when it opened in the morning
and buy a local edition reporting what had happened the previous day. But today a click or two is
enough to read your local paper and any news source from anywhere in the world, updated up to
the minute. Most companies now require for you to apply for a job online instead of walking in
and applying in person.

The other is cell phones. Cell phones have become a necessity for many people
throughout the world. The ability to keep in touch with family, business associates, and access to
email on demand are only a few of the reasons for the increasing importance of cell phones.
Today's technically advanced cell phones are capable of not only receiving and placing phone
calls, but storing data, taking pictures, and can even be used as walkie talkies. The texting feature
allows us to communicate with a person every second of the day without actually having a voice
conversation. We no longer need to talk to interact.
