Abstract. The 2013 curriculum directs students to empower all their potential so that
they can have the competencies expected through efforts to grow and develop
attitudes, knowledge and skills in order to achieve national education goals.
Innovation in learning is needed which is certainly adapted to the 21st century that
requires students to have skills in problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration,
communication and creativity. Critical thinking skills and science process skills are
abilities that students must have in learning the 2013 curriculum at this time. The
purpose of this study was to analyze the needs of high school chemistry students and
teachers for chemistry learning modules on guided discovery-based thermochemical
material to improve students' critical thinking skills and science process skills. One
hundred and twenty students of class XI and six teachers from from three senior high
schools in Surakarta participated in this study. The research instruments were
arranged based on the research indicators. Sources of data obtained from student
questionnaires, teacher questionnaires and teacher interviews. Data were analyzed
using qualitative methods. The results of the questionnaire analysis showed that
students and teachers needed the preparation of a guided discovery-based module to
improve students' critical thinking skills and science process skills.
