Badminton is a racket sport played using rackets to hit a shuttlecock over a net. The most Commented [HB1]: Net

common forms of the game are singles and doubles, there is one team either side of the net
and points are scored if the shuttle hits the ground in the opponent’s half. Commented [HB2]: A quick but concise introduction James.
Good Work.
Biomechanical principles: Commented [HB3]: You could also maybe talk about the shot
you chose to focus on specifically.
Force summation; is when you use more than one muscle group from the larger but slower
and stronger to the smaller and more nimble muscles to generate enough force to complete
an action that couldn’t be completed with just the smaller weaker muscles. In the overhead
clear force summation is important to drive up through your legs and torso and rotation of
your hips then into your shoulders which rotate and then it whips your arms around then Commented [HB4]: End Sentence here.

into the racket and into the shuttle. The force summation in an overhead clear is important Commented [HB5]: This then whips…

so that you can push your opponent back in their half of the court and open them up so you
can go on the offensive. Commented [HB6]: Excellent final summary about why Force
Summation is important.
Leverage; is a term used to describe the bodily movements made to generate enough force
to effectively clear the shuttle. Leverage is important in this shot because you use less force
to clear the shot so you don’t throw yourself off balance. Commented [HB7]: This is good James but you could also
potentially talk about how long levers are advantageous because
more speed is generated like yourself for example.
Analysation of my shot:
Commented [HB8]: Analysis
In the video of me clearing the shuttle my body is not side on I’m front on and I don’t use
my legs at all in the movement I use my hip a little bit and mostly my shoulders but in Commented [HB9]: End Sentence.

moving my shoulders I take my eyes off of the shuttle so I can’t see where I’m swinging the
racket which probably explains why I miss the shuttle when trying to clear it sometimes. Commented [HB10]: Good Example.

Also when I’m hitting the shuttle, my arm isn’t being fully extended and
it is at a 45-70 degree angle. This means that I’m not getting anywhere
near my maximum amount of leverage in my shot. Compared to my
classmates I have an advantage as I’m relatively tall compared to them
meaning that I have longer levers but I need to improve my shot to
maximise the amount of power in my shot. Also because my body is Commented [HB11]: Why is this an advantage?

most out of my shot.
get the most out of my shot.
Commented [HB13]: How can you improve this to make your
overhead clear more effective?

Professional analysation:
In Lin Dan’s overhead clear he jumps almost all the time and fully extends himself to get the
right amount of leverage to effectively clear the shuttle. During his actual swing his whole
body moves to generate the force needed to hit the shuttle. Commented [HB14]: From looking at Lin Dan’s technique,
what can you do to your technique to improve your clear?
