Closing the Digital Divide

One technology that is used to close the digital divide is laptops. When every student in a
school is provided a laptop, it ensures that all students have equal access to technology. Students
using these laptops can complete homework assignments, access e-books, and use internet
resources to study. Since not every student has home internet access, data plans can also be
provided with these laptops to ensure that every student can use laptops at home.
Another technology that can be implemented is small cell employments. Small cells are
low-powered radio equipment installed every few blocks on objects such as streetlights and
poles, and can provide internet. Typically, data is communicated wirelessly through tall cell
towers that are miles apart. Cities like San Jose, California do not have enough fiber to provide
internet access to all residents. As a solution, cities can help close the digital divide by making
broadband accessible to nearly all residents through small cells.
