Closing the digital divide with Hotspots and

Smart Phones
Hotspots
One technology that can help bridge the technological gap is the access to Hotspots. Hotspot is a
location where people can access the internet using WIFI. These locations are typically public
areas such as local libraries, schools, coffee shops or even bowling allies. By providing free
public WIFI in select businesses it gives people without access to internet at home the chance to
explore the online world.

Smartphones
Another way the digital divide can be closed is through the increasing use of smartphones.
Although smartphones have been popular for the last several years, it was not until recently that
they have become more widespread and easier to obtain. As the amount of access to smartphones
increases, people from all over the place have newfound access to internet through data plans on
their smart phones. Now people living in the rural areas can have access to the internet. As they
become increasingly popular, they are becoming much more readily available.
