What is Telematics?

Telematics combines the use of telecommunications and informatics to provide vehicle

monitoring and tracking for fleet managers. It works on GPS technology for location
information and GSM telecommunication technology for transmitting the data to an online
server.

Page | 3
How does Telematics work?

The GPS receiver of The Telematics device fitted inside the vehicle takes information from
GPS satellites and pinpoints the exact location of the vehicle location through its spatial co-
ordinates. The device transmits this data continuously through a GSM module which acts as
an internet or phone connection for the vehicle to an online server via GPRS or SMS. Besides
capturing location data, Telematics unit can also capture and send additional information of
events related to vehicles like speed, stoppage, theft, temperature etc.

The online server receives this data, processes it into a user friendly format and stores it into
the database. Fleet owners can access this information about their vehicles by logging on to a
specially created website. They can track all the vehicles in their fleet on a map on real time
basis in addition to getting all kinds of reports. The system can also send Alerts for certain
events or emergencies through SMS or email to the fleet owners so that quick action can be
taken.

Why Telematics?

With the help of Telematics, fleet owners can effectively monitor all the vehicles in their fleet
individually and collectively on real time basis. No longer do they need to get anxious about
the state of the vehicle. Whether it has deviated from the route or whether it is over speeding.
It not only helps them to track vehicles but also provides the information and scientific tools
for better management of their fleet, thereby increasing its efficiency, productivity and hence
profitability.

While Tata Fleet Man does all a telematics system can do, it holds out a bigger promise. The
OE fitment of Telematics units on the vehicle at the time of production ensures better
integration with the vehicle systems. This enhances the reliability as well as the life of the
Telematics units.

Additionally, there exists the potential of combining Telematics with different vehicular
systems like engine management system, fuel delivery system, transmission system, etc. to
launch Telematics applications in fuel management, prognostics and diagnostics.

Telematics system. To ensure reliability, durability and optimal performance in extreme
environmental conditions, Tata FleetMan employs an extremely rugged Telematics unit fitted
with state of the art electronic and electrical components. This technologically advanced and

that the unit can operate at near optimal levels in the most extreme temperatures and
withstand severe vibrations over long periods of time.
 A best in the industry, 3 years warranty on the telematics device
 The telematics unit has on-board LEDs for ease of fault diagnosis and field support.
 The unit has a built in protection against tampering – a tamper alert is instantly sent
to the fleet owner.
 In case of any software upgrades on the unit firmware, all existing units can
be remotely updated over the air, without external intervention or disturbance to
vehicle operation.

F) Challenges faced:

1) Excessive time spent on fleet management admin tasks

It might not appear as a cost on your financial statement, but time spent on administration tasks
that aren’t core business activities is an expense that can easily add up when it comes to fleet
management.

2) Relaying messages accurately to fleet drivers

Communication with your drivers as a fleet manager can be challenging, because you’re
often dealing with drivers out on the road, not onsite. Reaching your drivers via SMS, email,
radio or phone isn’t always possible, making communication even more complex.

Page | 16
Miscommunication is common between fleet managers and their teams, and this can lead to
assigned schedules not being followed correctly.

3) Internet Connectivity Issues
