JOHARA C. BAYABAO

A CLASSROOM OBSERVATION
I. Introduction
I use to believe that being a teacher was going to be eight hours of teaching and being with
students. Being a teacher seemed to be the easiest career choice out there for me. After viewing the
students of all ages and levels, I have changed my opinion of teaching. There is an unknown side to
the world that can only be seen when inside a classroom. Watching the students have made me
realize that being a teacher will carry some difficulties. Observing has made me realize that there is
more to teaching, the classroom, and what goes on inside.

I have observed a Creative Writing class which was a group of thirty-five students of the
Senior High School, grade 11 in Philippine Engineering and Agro-Industrial College, Inc. The
observation was done on Monday, September 3, 2018. The class started at 7:30 AM until 9:00 AM.

The teacher, Miss Prences Mae M. Langga, was happy and cheerful to all the students. She
never had to yell at the students for doing wrong or doing badly on work. She gave praise to the
students for doing well. Even when the students got off track from the question she asks. She
would just say that was interesting and go back to the question she started with. Needless to say,
the teacher really knows how to relate to her students. She knew exactly what motivated her
students and used these strategies. She was well-liked by all the students. The teacher conducted
herself in a professional manner and dressed that way also.

The class room is in the ground floor of the three-story new building of the school, it is the
first room you’ll see upon entering the gate of the school. It is very spacious and well ventilated.
It can accommodate forty students. It has three wide windows, as a result the room gets sufficient
air and light. The room is well electrified with two fans and three tube lights and equipped with a
55-inch flat screen TV that gives a wholesome and exciting classroom learning experience. There
are thirty-five smooth armchairs for the seating arrangement of the students. Two white boards

were fixed to the wall. The walls and the ceiling are nicely white washed. There is no wall writing.
The class room is neat and clean.

The students were all in their complete uniform. Not once did the students’ eyesight wander
to other places in the room. That teacher was interacting with the students in a way that the students
didn’t want to look in another direction. All the students were contributing to the development of
the discussion. These students apparently wanted to please their teacher. None of the students
misbehaved during the whole period.

II. Body: Sequence of Activities

1. At the beginning of the class, the teacher greeted the students and started reviewing what
they did last meeting and asking them about the previous topic.
2. Then she started explaining the new lesson by using a PowerPoint presentation to introduce
the new topic.
3. She asked the students to present their opinions orally according to the discussed topic.
4. Most of the students offer their comments and opinions and the teacher reinforces these
responses with positive remarks such "good", "excellent" and "Wonderful.
5. After discussing the topic, she asked the students to pay attention and listen to the track she
will be playing on the flat screen to answer the listening exercises.
6. First of all, she explained the instructions and read the statements aloud before playing the
tracks for them. Then she turned on the track and the student listening to it.
7. After listening to the track, the teacher gave the students five minutes to answer the
questions related to the listening exercise.
8. Then she started answering the questions with the students and explaining the meaning of
the idioms that are used in the track.
9. The teacher asked the students to answer the second listening exercise cooperatively.
10. She divided the students into six groups and asked them to listen to the track and then
summarize the main points in a piece of paper.
11. After that, she asked each group to choose one student to present the summary orally while
other groups asked her about the meaning of some words and idioms.
12. At the end of the class, the teacher asked the students to answer the assignment which is
posted on the White Board.

13. She finished the lecture by giving an overview of lesson content, taking the attendance and
asking them if they have any question.

III. Conclusion

Through my observation, I notice that the lecture appears to be a well-organized lecture. The
teacher explained the content clearly and tried to relate them to the students' experience. She tried
to relate the new lesson to the previous lesson. Also, she presented the topic in a logical sequence.
She maintained eye contact with the students, listened to the student comments and questions and
presented examples to clarify the difficult points. At the end of the lecture, she summarized the
main points of a lesson.

I think that the learning of a second language is a process that must be developed with the help
of technology because it gives the learner more opportunities to learn and practice the language. I
have observed that many teachers follow the same traditional methods in teaching without trying
to improve them or include any technological tools to reinforce their teaching. There are many
common teaching methods to teach English as a second language, but I think that the most effective
one is the method that is enhanced with a technological tool.
