Observation Reaction/Analysis to EFL UPB Class (Group 24)

This observation was conducted in class UPB Group 24, at UIN Antasari
Banjarmasin. In this class consists of 16 students from different majors and faculties, there
are several students from English majors, as well as Mathematics Education. The number of
students consists of only 16 students which is less than usual.
I was very excited to do this observation, because I had also previously attended
UPB classes. And now I take UPB classes not as a student but as an observatory. Based on
what I have learned before in TEFL courses on approaches, methods and strategies in
teaching English as a foreign language, I would like to know how teachers use methods and
approaches in teaching English as a foreign language. I want to know what methods are used,
how teachers use methods and also approaches in the English classroom, how teachers absorb
approaches in the classroom, what materials are taught, activities and collaborations of
students, how to interact between teachers and also students, and also the tasks given by
teachers to students.
In this lesson the teacher asked the students to explain the material they had
learned last week briefly, in addition the teacher also asked the student to read the material
shared on the screen, the approach is adapted to the lesson material, for the introduction of
the material using the lecture method and to check the understanding given exercises and
assignments. I think here the teacher uses an enlightened eclectic approach that is by
combining two methods, namely grammatical translation and also the method of lectures for
delivery interspersed with question and answer.
Teachers think of the desired methodological options by adapting the class to a
specific context and adding things that feel necessary to make learning successful based on
experience, observation, observation, discussion and also the teaching process itself. It also
depends on the learning objectives as well as the abilities of the students. Teachers focus on
grammar rules, text translation, written exercises, highly structured class assignments with
teachers controlling all activities, teachers giving instruction and also grammatical translation
approach. The teacher also uses the lecture method in delivering the material.
As for techniques and strategies teachers use a variety of techniques and
strategies according to the needs can be through lectures, discussions, playing games and
assignments. For lesson planning, teachers follow the learning objectives that have been set
from UPB. For evaluation students are asked to ask questions and then collected in google
classroom or through google form. In addition to using google meet teachers also usually use
google classroom and whatsapp group as learning media. The response of students during the
learning is very active and responsive, sometimes students ask about materials that are not yet
understood and also answer questions given by the teacher. And to keep the class conducive
teachers often give random questions so that students will remain alert and attentive. As for
assignments, teachers assign assignments according to what's in the UPB package book and
then collected in Google Classroom.
