Show time at the Apollo

Summary (150 to 300 words)

This article is about an important theater in New York City. This theater is called
Apollo. A lot of African- American entertainers like singers, artists and comedians start
their careers there. One of them was Billie Holiday, she was very nervous when she
started her performance because she saw a very critical audience, so she thought that
her performance was going to be a trash. But a comedian Pigmeat markhan gave her
advices so she started and she was accepted. Now she is a music legend of jazz.

But she wasn’t the last, there was an amateur-night contest that was created by Ralph
Cooper, all the Wednesdays at night the people who wanted made a performance
could do that. The Jackson five’s with the king of pop Michael Jackson made their first
presentation one of this nights in 1967.

Other African- American performers had their first performance there like Aretha
Franklin, the “Queen of Soul”, James Brown, the “Godfather of Soul”, who appeared
for the first time in 1959 and he sang ‘Please, please, please’ , a very nice song that
everybody loved when he made his performance.

However, the Apollo had bad moments when in the mid-1970s they competed with the
Madison Square garden and a local economic crisis made that Apollo closed the doors
for the audience and artists, but in 1980s, a businessman Percy Sutton’s Inner City
Broadcasting Corporation bought it, so the fixed all and it was incredible.

This year Apollo, the theater of African-American Artists, celebrates 75 years

remembering all the history that they have behind the scene in this interesting article.

Personal Opinion (Min. 50 words for 150-word summaries | Min. 100 words for
300-word summaries)

It’s very important that they have some place where the younger talents can sing, act
or do a stand up comedy. In USA are very racists, so they had to make a special
theater for African-American people, I think is the one bad thing, we can’t discriminate
other people for the color of their skin, is so silly. Also we can enjoy with the skills of
the artist that make a performance like James Brown or Michael Jackson.

In Peru we don’t have a theater like Apollo, but it’ll be interesting if we make one
because there are a lot of people with good skills to sing or dance. But in the different
TV programs in Peru they make contests where the people can participate dancing or
singing and the inscriptions are easy to do. Also we have theaters, but they are more
for the consolidated artists, so we have to introduce the new talents in this world.
