First of all, we would like to thank the almighty god for giving us the wisdom and strength to

participate in this activity.

Sincere thanks and acknowledgment to our Department Head and our teacher in the subject

Environmental Sanitation, Engr. Lizamyl R. Laping for allowing us to experience conducting

this water sampling and bacteriological exam, to increase the awareness of the students in such in

the near be useful for future specifications in the field of our work as Sanitary Engineers and

acknowledgement to the researchers for finding time and generosity to participate in the activity

and also to ZCMC for allowing us let our water sample be tested in the parameter for e.coli.

Dedication

This water sampling is mainly dedicated for partial fulfillment in the subject Environmental

Sanitation and for the awareness of people of how safe is the water sources for the different

facilites inside the Western Mindanao State University premise.

Abstract

Bacteriological water sampling of water supplied by City water District of Zamboanga City

water system connected to facilities inside the Western Mindanao State University Main Campus

A and B. The purpose of this activity is to determine the total coliform (e.coli) present in the

water supplied by city water district determining the effectiveness, prevention and awareness of

possible contamination and prevent diseases from occurring inside the school premises.

The end result and basis for this activity is based on water parameters found in PNSDW 2017 on

annex B Table B-1 Mandatory Drinking-water Quality Parameters, page 25. This activity is

bounded by proper storing of water sample placing it in cool temperature considering

thermotolerant factors and water sampling result for this parameter done in the laboratory which

may take days.

Introduction

1.2 Background of the study

Water along with life (people, animals, trees, microorganisms and etc.) is what sets our

planet apart from our neighbors and it is the topic of this research. The hydrosphere is the watery

part of the Earth, but this is a little misleading since it gives the impression that there is one place

where water occurs. Instead, water is everywhere, or nearly so. Water is present in the

atmosphere, in the form of vapor, liquid, and solid. It is tied up in rocks, locked away in the

crystal lattices of minerals that make up rocks; it occurs in the innumerable small pore spaces of

rocks, from the surface to depths greater than 5 km. Water is also tied up in living organisms;

humans, for example, contain about 70% water. Water is stored in ice sheets large and small, it

occurs in various surface water bodies, and, of course the oceans, the reservoir of the great

majority of Earth's water. The hydrosphere, then, is intimately tied up with all of the other

spheres that make up our whole Earth system.

Drinking water testing and analysis services provided by a national testing laboratories or

certified/licensed professionals. The residential water testing program includes analysis for

common water quality problems, microbiological contamination, and makes recommendations

regarding the potential need for water treatment devices, such as: softeners, reverse osmosis

units, distillation, neutralizers, chlorination systems, ultraviolet or UV systems. Clean water, free

of pollution and disease, is too often taken for granted. For billions of people, it’s out of reach.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

This research is aimed to determine whether water supplied by the city water district of

Zamboanga city inside the Western Mindanao State University premises is safe and free of

contaminants.

1.3 Significance of the Study

Depending on the result significance could be in a basis of human awareness and trust in

the city water district for reliability of safe water circulation within our vicinity.

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The main objective is to determine whether the water sample is free of contaminants.

1.5 Scope and Limitation

The limitation of this activity is it is only true inside the Western Mindanao State

University campus, and determining the result of the water sampling can’t be determine through

our senses but through laboratory analyzation to be done in ZCMC.

The Effects of Ground Water Sampling Devices on Water Quality

This paper reviews both field and laboratory studies that tested or compared the ability of

various types of sampling devices to deliver representative ground water samples. Several types

of grab samplers, positive displacement devices, and suction‐lift devices were evaluated, Gas‐lift

and inertial‐lift pumps were also evaluated. This study found that most of these devices can.

under certain circumstances, alter the chemistry of ground water samples, das‐lift pumps, older

types of submersible centrifugal pumps, and suction‐lift devices are not recommended when

sampling for sensitive constituents such as volatile organics and inorganics, or inorganics that are

subject to oxidation/precipitation reactions. In general, of the devices reviewed in this paper,

bladder pumps gave the best recovery of sensitive constituents. However, better performance

could be achieved for several devices if improved operational guidelines were developed by

additional testing, especially at lower flow rates. Clearly, further research is warranted. Future

studies should focus on pumping rate, flow control mechanisms, and dedication or

decontamination of sampling devices.

Chapter III

Methodology

3.1 Qualitative and Quantitative

This research is based on quality water and quantity of contaminants in the water. In

determining the water to be tested searched for taps/faucets in the Western Mindanao State

University connected to the city water district stored the water in a container and stored it in a

cool temperature upon bringing the sample to ZCMC for laboratory analysis and further study

the sample based on the standard drinking water quality parameter on PNSDW of 2017.

3.2 Materials

Materials used in this activity are the following bottled water container ice chest and

crushed ice.

3.3 Sampling Procedure

For sampling procedure making sure the container to be thoroughly cleaned and turn the

tap on as we normally would do to covered the container and place it in an ice chest with ice.

3.4 Data Gathering

Gathering of data is limited inside the premises of Western Mindanao State University

and only water systems connect to the city water district.

3.5 Data Analysis

Laboratory result will be referred to the water quality standard parameter for drinking

water found in the PNSDW of 2017.
