Get Start to MAPDL

Workbench Advanced –
Use of MAPD

Note on Workshop 1
The first workshop is extensively documented. As this course progresses,
students will become more familiar with basic Mechanical APDL functionality
(menu locations etc.), thus subsequent workshops will contain less details.
Throughout these workshops menu paths are documented as: “First pick >
Second pick > etc.”.
Workshops begin with a goals section followed by an assumptions section.

Goal
You will learn here how to launch MADL from the product Launcher or from the
project page, resume a database, solve and post-process a simulation.

Open ANSYS with the Launcher
1. Go to START > Programs >
ANSYS 16.0 > ANSYS Product
Launcher
This will bring up the 16.0 ANSYS
Launcher.
2. From the drop down menus at
the top, select “Simulation
Environment” as “ANSYS” and
“License” as “ANSYS
MULTIPHYSICS”
3. Fill in Working Directory
specified by the instructor and
the Job Name “Workshop1”
4. Click “Run” at the bottom of the
Launcher

Resume Database
Click the RESUM_DB Icon
• This will resume the database in the working directory with the current
filename, “Workshop1.db”

Plot the area, lines and nodes
In the Utility Menu, click on “Plot”, then “Areas”
Also, plot “Lines” and “Nodes”

Plot Results
In the ANSYS Main Menu, click on the General Postproc
Then click on Plot Results > Contour Plot > Nodal Solu
• This will bring up a window where you can select postprocessing (see the next
slide)

… Plot Results
Select Nodal Solution > DOF Solution > Y-Component of Displacement, and
click [Apply]
• Note, this was the plot that the Instructor showed you demonstrating the match
with theory.

Select Nodal Solution > Stress > von Mises Stress
Also, select to plot with “Deformed shape with undeformed edge”, click
[OK]

Exit ANSYS
Click on the QUIT Icon
Select “Quit - No Save!”, Click [OK]

Go further!
If you finish this workshop and find yourself with extra time, you could try the
following steps:

1. Add a “Mechanical APDL system” in the Workbench project Page


2. Resume the database “workshop1.db”
3. By using the Main Menu delete the FY and apply a displacement of UY=0.05
4. Solve and post-process equivalent stresses.
