The Integumentary System TThe Integumentary System

Anatomy & Physiology 101

■ Integument is skin
■ Skin and its appendages make up the
integumentary system
■ A fatty layer (hypodermis) lies deep to it
■ Two distinct regions
◻ Epidermis
◻ Dermis

Epidermis
Functions of skin ■ Made of the following types of cells
◻ Keratinocytes – deepest, produce keratin
■ Protection (tough fibrous protein)
◻ Cushions and insulates and is waterproof
◻ Protects from chemicals, heat, cold, bacteria
◻ Melanocytes - make dark skin pigment
◻ Screens UV
melanin
■ Synthesizes vitamin D with UV
■ Regulates body heat ◻ Merkel cells – associated with sensory nerve
■ Prevents unnecessary water loss endings
■ Sensory reception (nerve endings)
Skin color
■ Due to pigments:
◻ Melanin: the most important
◻ Carotene: from carrots and yellow
food

Skin appendages Nails

■ Derived from epidermis but extend into ■ Of hard keratin
dermis ■ Grows from nail matrix
■ Include
◻ Hair and hair follicles
◻ Sebaceous (oil) glands
◻ Sweat (sudoriferous) glands
◻ Nails
Hair and hair follicles: ■ Functions of hair
◻ Warmth – less in man than other mammals
complex
Derived from epidermis and ◻ Sense light touch of the skin
dermis ◻ Protection - scalp
