Recreational Activities
 an activity of leisure, such as a game or hobby that is pursued primarily for pleasure
 are often done for enjoyment, amusement, or pleasure and are considered to be “fun”
 the expenditure of time with an intent to gain some refreshment
 anything that is stimulating and rejuvenating for an individual
Classification of Recreational Activities:

 Spectator Type - people spend their time watching the event and derive enjoyment from it
 Participant Type - people do not gain enjoyment merely by watching; they do so by joining the
activity
 Active Type - people have to function effectively in performing the action
 Passive Type - people have no excessive movement in performing the task or action
Other Classification of Recreational Activities:

 Physical - minor games, group games, camping, outing


 Social - social dancing, attending parties, joining parlor games
 Cultural - arts and crafts, joining glee clubs or music ministries and choirs, dramatic guilds
 Intellectual - song, poetry, answering puzzle, playing scrabble, bowling, chess, dart
Scope of Recreational Activities:

 Indoor - this type of recreational activity is usually done inside or indoors


Examples: Games and Sports - chess, parlor games
Dance Activities - stop dance, trip to Jerusalem, paper dance
Music Activities - videoke, instrumental playing
Drama Activities - story telling, comedy skits
Arts and Crafts - origami, pop-up cards

 Outdoor - this type of recreational activity is usually done outside or outdoors, it is mostly active
in nature
Examples: Games and Sports - basketball, volleyball, beach volley

 Recreation is done voluntarily – your own free will to do recreational activities


 Recreation is performed during free time – should be aware that engaging in recreational
activities should not be in conflict with your other tasks or responsibilities
 Recreation is for social, emotional and spiritual connection – activities will give you a feeling
that is intrinsic to the well-being of your soul
 Recreation is a reward – best motivation for you to participate in recreational activities is the
benefit that you can derive from it: fitness and satisfaction; promotes friendship and camaraderie
 Recreation is flexible – can be organized or unorganized; • organized – recreational institution
and centers provide systematic recreational program and activities • unorganized – done by you
with no specific plan
 Recreation is a “problem-solver” – help them solve their problems – as a positive result, you
tend to be more disciplined and sports-minded individual – helps reduce academic and scholastic
inferiority complex
 Recreation is not a single form – can choose from and engage in different recreational
activities depending on your preference

Sports
 'Sport' comes from the old French word called Desport which means "Leisure".
 Commonly defined as an organized, competitive, and skillful physical activity requiring
commitment and fair play.
 It also requires physical actions and skills where individuals or teams compete under a set of
rules.
 Sport gives people enjoyment, happiness, friendship, satisfaction, health, fitness, popularity,
recognition, the feeling of victory and success, but on the other hand, it may be boring, cause
sadness, sorrow, disappointment, fatigue, exhaustion, injuries, illness, and in some cases even
death.
 Examples of some of the sports that we usually play: volleyball, basketball, football, chess and
many others.
Games
 A form of play, especially a competitive one played according to rules and decided by skill,
strength, or luck.
 An activity among two or more independent decision-makers seeking to achieve their objectives
in some limiting context.
 Games or educational games are activities involving one or more people, on the move with or
without an object or implement, playing under mutually agreed upon set of rules.

Suggestions for Teaching Games

 When teaching games, the instructor must bring the equipment needed in specific game or sport.
 The instructor must show how it will be done.
 The instructor must be familiar with the game/sport that he/she will teach.
What to Consider in Selecting Games

 Select sports and recreational activities that provide the benefits needed
 Choose activities that match your abilities
 Try many different activities
 Choose activities that are accessible to you
 Choose activities that you'll practice
 Choose activities for which you can get good instruction
