Thank to Almighty God who has given His bless to the writer for finishing the English
paper assignment entitled “Describing Place”. The writer also wish to express his deep and
sincere gratitude for those who have guided in completing this paper.

Second, we went to say thanks to Mrs. Dina Novita Wijayanti that had helped us to
make this presentation, so this presentation can accomplish well.

Hopefully, this paper can help the readers to expand their knowledge about English
reading. We realize that our paper is not perfect, therefore we also highly appreciated the
readers who give us constructive and positive inputs for the betterment of this paper.

 CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. ISSUES BACKGROUND

Everyone must have visited an interesting place such as beaches, lakes,

mountains, even shopping malls. Try to imagine how the atmosphere, shape and
characteristics of each place you visit. Is it beautiful, comfortable, or crowded? The
situation we mentioned earlier is a description of a description of a place. This material
is included in Descriptive Text which aims to explain, describe, and express the nature
and appearance of a thing. What can be described is in the form of humans / people,
animals, objects and places. Well, on this occasion we will focus on Descriptive Text
which discusses places or describing places.

B. PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION
1. What is the definition of Describing Place ?
2. What is the purpose of Desribing Place?
3. What is the general structure of describing place ?
4. What is the linguistic features in desribing place ?
C. PURPOSE
The formulation of the problem that can be drawn from this discussion is :
1. To explain definition of describing place
2. To explain the purpose of describing place
3. To explain about the generic structure in discribing place
4. To explain about the linguistic features

DISCUSSION

1. Definition of Describing Place

Describing place is a text that describes a place in a detailed. A good description
of a 'place' helps to explain what makes it so different from other 'places' and can give
a good guide as to where it is located.
2. The Purpose of Describing Place
The purpose of Describing place is to describe a place in detail. So that the
readers or listeners are able to understand what we describe and also they’re able to
imagine the place we describe even though they haven’t seen it before. However,
there is no need to do deep research, since it only decribes a place based on what it
seen and heard.
3. Generic Structure
Describing places requires 3 steps or what we usually call the generic structure,
namely :
a) Introduction
This section is the opening of a text, which provides brief information
about the name and location of the place we are going to tell. In this section we
must mention the reasons why the writer chose the place to be told, for
example like; what makes that place famous, what makes it special, and so on.
b) Main Body
Main body is part of the core story that describes the place or building.
The essence of this story usually starts from telling a general part, then tells a
special part so that it will become a conical story. For example, when we tell
about a place, we can start from the characteristics of a place such as how the
landscape, the building, the weather, etc., then refer to specific details that
complement the previous general explanation.
 c) Conclusion
This section is the conclusion of the author after visiting the place.
Which describes your feelings, or opinions from the place, you can also provide
recommendations for readers who will visit the place.
4. Linguistic Features
Describing place has the following linguistic characteristics:

1. Using Simple Present Tense

The sentence pattern used is simple present because it tells the
facts of the object description.
2. Using adjectives to clarify the noun
Describing something will be easier to understand if you use
adjectives so that something we describe can be imagined more clearly.
For example : A beautiful beach, The famous place in Jepara etc.

3. Using conjunctions (Linking Verb)

A conjunctive is a word that connects the subject to the word
explanation. The conjunctions can be either to be (is, am, are) or
something else, like seem, look, appear, sound, etc.

4. Use specific participant

Describing place has a certain object, not general and unique (there
is only one). For example: Bandengan beach, my house, the Borobudur
temple

5. Use action verbs

There are verbs that show an activity (activity can be seen), for
example: run, sleep, walk, etc.
5. Example of describing place
Tanjung Setia Beach

Lampung is not only famous for its Way Kambas National Park. One of the
best tourist attractions of this province is Tanjung Setia Beach. This beach is
located in the village of Tanjung Setia, West Lampung district, Lampung province.
It is about 273 km or about six to seven hour driving from Bandar Lampung, the
capital city of Lampung province.

This beach has not been well known by the citizens of Indonesia yet, but
for the world surfers this beach is a hidden paradise for surfing. This beach is
exactly laid on the track of large Indian Ocean currents that make this beach
have waves which are quite perfect for surfing. The perfect wave of this beach
usually lasts from June to August with the height which can reach up to six to
seven meters with a 200 meters length.

In addition to perfect waves for surfing, the beach also has an ambience
which is quite natural with white sand along the beach. Rows of palm tree which
grow also adorn this beach. For local people, the beach area is also an ideal place
for fishing. Some fish which are often obtained by the fisherman are blue marlin
which is so big enough that its weight can reach up to 70 kilograms. By local
residents this fish is known by the name of Iwa Tuhuk.

CLOSING

A. Conclusion

Based on the description of the discussion "Describing Place" can be concluded that :

1. Describing place is a text that describes a place in a detailed

2. The purpose of describing place is to make readers or listeners are able to understand
what we describe and are able to imagine the place we describe
3. There are 3 generic structure in describing place that is introduction, main body, and
conclusion
4. There are 5 linguistic features that used in describing place that is use present tense,
use specific participant, use adjective, use conjunction, and using action verb.
