Content Standards: The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of variation
and radicals.
Performance Standards: The learner is able to formulate and solve accurately problems
involving variation and radicals.

I. Objectives:

a. Illustrate situations that involve direct variation

b. Identify examples of direct variation
c. Appreciate the concept of direct variation in real life situations.
II. Content:
Topic: VARIATION: Direct Variation
III. Learning Resources:
a. References:
i. Teachers Guide pp. 132-134
ii. Learners Manual pp. 193-195
b. Materials:
i. Activity Sheets, Laptop, TV, Manila Paper, White Board and Marker
IV. Procedures:
a. Prayer
b. Greetings
c. Preliminary Activity
Group Activity:
Show the following pictures on the TV screen. Each group will also receive the
pictures and let each group study the features of each picture. Let them identify the
related quantities. Paste it on the manila paper and answer the questions that follow.

Questions:
1. Can you explain how the quantities are related?
a. Wall/Paint
b. Groceries/Money
c. Nature of Activity/Heartbeat
d. Speed and Distance/Time
e. Hard work/Success

d. Lesson Proper:
i. Presentation of Examples
Activity 1:
The SSG of Ayala High School launches a recycling campaign of
waste materials in order to raise students‟ awareness of environmental
protection and the effects of climate change. This is in connection with the
celebration of Science Month. Every kilogram of waste materials earns points
that can be exchanged for school supplies. Paper, which is the number one
waste collected, earns 6 points for every kilo.
The table below shows the points earned by Grade 9 Astatine class for
every number of kilograms of waste paper collected.

Questions:
a. What happens to the number of points when the number of kilograms of paper
is doubled?
b. How many kilograms of papers will the Grade 9 Astatine class have in order
to raise 600 points?
c. What mathematical statement will relate the two quantities involved?
d. In what way are you able to help clean the environment by collecting these
papers? What items can be made out of these papers?

travels at a constant speed and the distance it covers.
Problem: A car travels at 60 kilometers per hour. How far has it travelled after:
a. Half an hour
b. 2 hours
c. 3 hours
d. 4 hours

V. Evaluation:
Quiz Bee
Write MOBILE if the given situation is a direct variation and LEGEND if it is not.
1. The time a teacher spends in checking test papers to the number of students
2. The age of the used car to its resale value
3. The employee’s salary to the number of days he worked
4. The amount of money raised in a concert to the number of tickets sold
5. The number of hours to finish a job to the number of men working
6. The area of the wall to the amount of paint used to cover it
7. The number of persons sharing a large pie to the number of slices of the pie
8. The fare of a passenger to the distance of his/her destination
9. The distance an airplane flies to the time travelling
10. The cost per person of renting a private resort to the number of persons
sharing the rent

VI. Assignment:
Do you remember the Parable of Talents? What do you think God expect us to do with
the talents we received? Now, complete the statement of relationship.
The more talents you are given, ___________________________________________.
Answer it on ¼ sheet of paper and submit on next meeting.
