2 EXPERIMENTAL ACTIVITIES
2.1 Mounting techniques Sicon Cabinet transformer 40 kVA S/N P529491001 (Unit 1), Cabinet transformer 180
kVA S/N P529490001 (Unit 2) and UPS Modulys GP 2.0 180 kW S/N P229751001 (Unit 3)
were fixed to “UPN 200 steel profile (UNI5680-73)” by means of M12 screws. UPN 200
profiles were fixed to the shaking table “MASTER” by means of clamps with M30 bolts
(tightening torque = 500 Nm).
Battery protection box 250 A S/N P529492001 (Unit 4) was fixed to a steel support. Steel
support was fixed to the shaking table “MASTER” by means of clamps with M30 bolts
(tightening torque = 500 Nm).
Test lay-out is reported in photos 1 ÷ 4.
2.2 Unit conditions and During the seismic test the Sicon Cabinet transformer 40 kVA S/N P529491001 (Unit 1),
Cabinet transformer 180 kVA S/N P529490001 (Unit 2) and UPS Modulys GP 2.0 180 kW
functional checks S/N P229751001 (Unit 3) were in operating condition. Controls before, during and after
the vibration and seismic tests have been performed as summarized in par. 4.5. The
interpretation of these results are under SICON S.r.l. responsibility.
2.3 Orientation and The reference directions and the measuring positions are shown in photo 1 (general
view) and photos 5 ÷ 20 details.
measuring positions
Reference directions were defined as: horizontal X, Y and vertical Z.
The identification of measuring transducers was made using three characters:
• 1st character (letter/s): type of measurement: A = acceleration,
S = strain,
F = load.
• 2nd character (number): transducer location on the unit.
• 3rd character (letter): sensitivity direction of transducer (X, Y or Z axis).
Strain gauges were mounted by CESI personnel (see photo 1). Due to graphical
reason, the label of figures relevant to strain gages is reported as “um” (mechanical
units) instead of “µε” (microepsilon).
2.4 Performed tests Tests were performed with reference to docs. |1|, |2| and |3|. Test procedures have
been verified by SICON S.r.l..
Following test sequence was applied:
• Sweep sine tests (*): monoaxial excitation applied (0,10g), not simultaneously,
along X, Y and Z directions;
• Tri-axial seismic tests with Time Histories synthesised from doc. |2| spectra,
Qualification UBC 1997 "Zone 4", Level 0,4g;
• Sweep sine tests (*): monoaxial excitation applied (0,10g), not simultaneously,
along X, Y and Z directions.
Table of figure 2 show the list of performed tests. The test number is the reference for
the chronological sequence.
2.4.1 Resonant frequency In order to check the resonance frequencies and damping ratio of the units (at the first
vibration mode), frequency sinusoidal scannings were performed in each of the three
search tests (*) reference directions X, Y and Z, not simultaneously before (tests 1 ÷ 3) and after (tests
5 ÷ 7) the seismic tests.
The tests were performed, in accordance with docs. |1| and |3|, as follows:
• frequency range: 0,50 ÷ 37,00 Hz;
Pag. 6/53
CESI
TEST REPORT APPROVED B5017510
f1 − f 2
ζ = ⋅ 100 where:
2 ⋅ f0
• ζ is the percent damping (%)
• f0 is the resonance frequency value
• f1 and f2 are the frequency values corresponding to the “half-power points”,
determined from the peak response value at f0 divided by 2
This calculation method postulate only single degrees of freedom object.
2.4.2 Seismic test Triaxial multifrequency tests, in accordance with docs. |1| and |2|, were carried out
with simultaneous but independent inputs into the horizontal X and Y and vertical Z
axes, each producing the Required Response Spectrum (RRS).
Seismic test qualification UBC 1997 "Zone 4" |2| Level 100% was obtained along each
reference axis calculated with 1/12 octave of frequency bandwidth and 5% damping
(this value has been chosen in agreement with the Client following the damping data
calculated with Resonant Frequency Search tests, see tabs. 1 and 2 of par. 5).
1
The response function in the frequency domain is the amplitude (modulus and phase) of the unit response component having the same
frequency of the fundamental of the excitation. The absolute response function in the frequency domain is a complex function of a real
variable. The absolute transfer function is the ratio between the absolute response function in a measuring position (output) and that in
the control position (input). Being the absolute response function a complex quantity, the absolute transfer function was calculated
frequency by frequency, through the ratio of the moduli and the difference of the phases.
2
The lower bound of the frequency range has been fixed to 1,14 Hz instead of 0,53 Hz, in order to avoid displacement beyond the limits of
the shaking table on level test and in order to standard prescription on RRS calculation, where the frequency point at 1,28 Hz must to be
used in all cases, and the additional frequency points are developed from this point of departure, according to the resolution limits
indicated.

3 TEST EQUIPMENT
3.1 Excitation equipment Tests were carried out on the triaxial shaking table “MASTER” with the following
features:
3.2 Motion control, data Digital system SIGNAL STAR multi-channels manufactured by DATA PHYSIC France
(DELL workstation Precision 410 with analog/digital converter on 32 channels and 16
acquisition and bits).
processing equipment
The acquisition and control system generates the motion with the requested features
and feedsback the shaking table motion using the signal coming from the control
accelerometer. Analog signals coming from the control and measuring transducers
were amplified and conveyed to an analog/digital converter which sent the data to the
hard disk of the aforementioned computer for the recording and subsequent
processing.
The block scheme of the excitation and processing equipment is shown in fig. 1.
