Percentage of Abaca Wastes for Trial 1

Compressive Strength Test for Trial 1

For the first trial, the variations of compressive strength of the blocks with various

percentage of abaca waste content are shown in Figure 1.

It is observed that the compressive strength of the concrete block with abaca

waste has increased greatly from the standard hollow blocks to the 1% abaca content and

has decreased at 1.5% but the 1% and 2% obtained the same results. The compressive

strength was observed to be 362 psi for 1% of abaca waste, 271 psi for 1.5% of abaca

waste and 362 psi for 2% of abaca waste. Therefore, the ideal percentages of abaca

wastes in this trial are the 1.0% and the 2.0% since they obtained the same results. For the
11

controlled concrete hollow block with no abaca waste, the compressive strength was

observed as 136 psi.

Based on the results obtained from the test, we could say that with the increase in

fiber content, the compressive strength results also increased but reduction of strength is

noticed, especially beyond the addition of 1.5% of abaca wastes and the mix becomes

more fibrous causing difficulty in handling.

In comparison with other studies of Fiber Reinforced Hollow Concrete Blocks,

maximum compressive strength was exhibited by the samples with 1% abaca waste fibers

and 2% abaca waste fibers which had the same result of 362 psi. The result was

inconsistent due to the lowering of the compressive strength in the 1.5% abaca waste

fibers added so the researchers should perform a second trial wherein they will test

different ratios of abaca wastes and concrete.

Percentage of Abaca Wastes for Trial 2

Compressive Strength Test for Trial 2

For the second trial, the variations of compressive strength of the blocks with

various percentage of abaca waste content are shown in Figure 3.

It is observed that the compressive strength of the concrete block with abaca

waste has increased from the standard hollow blocks to the 1% abaca content and has

now continued increasing unlike the results in the first trial. The compressive strength

was observed as 275 psi for 1% of abaca waste, 303 psi for 1.5% of abaca waste and 355

psi for 2% of abaca waste. For the controlled concrete hollow block with no abaca waste,

the compressive strength was observed as 135 psi.

13

Based on the new results obtained, the researchers could say that with the increase

in fiber content, the compressive strength results also increased and it is seen in the graph

of the results.

In comparison with the previous trial, maximum compressive strength was

exhibited by the sample with 2% abaca waste fibers which had the result of 355 psi. The

researchers will perform a last trial to see if this increase in compressive strength is

consistent now with the new ratios of abaca fibers.

Figure 5. Variation of Compressive Strength of Hollow Concrete Blocks with various

Percentage of Abaca Wastes for Trial 3

Compressive Strength Test for Trial 3

For the third and last trial, the variations of compressive strength of the blocks

with various percentage of abaca waste content are shown in Figure 5.

It is observed that the compressive strength of the concrete block with abaca

waste has increased from the standard hollow blocks to the 1% abaca content and has

now continued increasing just like the results in the second trial. The compressive

strength was observed as 210 psi for 1% of abaca waste, 310 psi for 1.5% of abaca waste

and 349 psi for 2% of abaca waste. For the controlled concrete hollow block with no

abaca waste, the compressive strength was observed as 138 psi.

15

Based on the new results obtained, the researchers could say that with the increase

in fiber content, the compressive strength results also increased and it is seen in the graph

of the results.

In comparison with the previous trial, maximum compressive strength was

exhibited by the sample with 2% abaca waste fibers which had the result of 349 psi. The

results therefore show that this increase in compressive strength is consistent and show

the same results with the previous trial.
