2 6 A soil profile consists of a layer of sand over alternating layers of clay and
silt over gravel (Fig. 2). The unit weight and the permeability of the clay
(C) and silt (S) layers are given in the figure. The water table is 1 ft
below the ground surface. A piezometer installed at point A reveals a
porewater pressure of 1248 psf.
