Assignment # 1 – Stresses in Soils (1D Flow) This Assignment will

assess your CLO/s as per OBE

CLO-1: Explain and Understand basic geotechnical concepts and Solve

problems related to foundation engineering, and retaining structures.

1. Solve the given questions, however you are required to submit

any 3 x questions provided in the problem set of 6 x Questions as
assignment.
2. Answers to the questions are given in end for reference.
3. The assignment is due after one week of issue.

2 6 A soil profile consists of a layer of sand over alternating layers of clay and
silt over gravel (Fig. 2). The unit weight and the permeability of the clay
(C) and silt (S) layers are given in the figure. The water table is 1 ft
below the ground surface. A piezometer installed at point A reveals a
porewater pressure of 1248 psf.

Assuming steady state flow in the vertical direction, compute at points B

and C

a. rate of flow in cu ft/day/ft2.

b. porewater pressure.

c. effective vertical stress.

d. total vertical stress.
