In my role as Public Affairs Student Associate, I worked with editors to highlight the important and
exciting research produced by faculty and students. I organized and conducted interviews, developed
story angles, and fact-checked their quotes once the story was ready.
The process taught me how to translate research that was often highly technical and discipline-specif-
ic into stories that are exciting for a more general audience. Thanks to skills training provided by my
supervisors, I had the chance to attend journalism workshops that taught me techniques such as using
a thought-provoking lead to draw readers in.
My job was also to link each person’s research to the key institutional messages of Yale-NUS College.
One key message was the importance of liberal arts to solving problems in an increasingly inter-con-
nected world, which my writing samples have sought to capture.
Finally, this job also honed my attention to detail. I learnt how to keep to a house style, to proof-read
and edit, and to give my best in creating an accurate, compelling story in general.

In my internship at the Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE), I was in charge of directly updating their Wordpress site. I uploaded
articles and chose suitable cover images to be featured. I also designed and added the petition banner in the right column for the SHOUT (Sexual
Harrassment Out) campaign.
I also was in charge of media tracking, in which I would update the Latest Women World News on the website with three new articles daily which I
found from various online news sources. I used Google News alerts to find relevant pieces.
