Communication summary

Effective communication is important when working with children and

any other person of different age brackets and social status. Communication

is based on the ability to sending a well-coded signal that can be encoded by

the receiver without straining. The key components of effective

communication involve questioning skills, understanding and finally

providing feedback. This is a basic model of communication skills.

Communication skills develop with time right from birth; this is to mean it is

a continuous process. A good communication calls for well-developed

listening skills; evidence shows that effective communication with children

and young people should be formal which enhances synthesis of ideas and

the content being delivered. The needs of individuals in a community decide

the channel and direction of communicating. Speech development depends

on the immediate environment of an individual. Understanding the

psychology of a child is a key factor in instilling communication patterns.

Parents play an important role in ensuring transition of their children in

terms of communication skills development. Practitioners need to have

general knowledge of young people before choosing the right channel of

communication with children.
