BWP bags 5th international award The Burgos Wind Project (BWP) has been named the
Best Export Credit Agency-Backed Green Deal and one of the Top Ten Global Deals of the Year by Trade and Export
Finance, a London-based global publication. The BWP is the only project in the Philippines that made it to the
elite list of awardees. This is the fifth international award received by Energy Development Corporation (EDC)

poration (EDC) beefs up its
diversified renewable-energy
portfolio with three new solar
power projects in the Visayas
and Mindanao.
The Department of En-
ergy has approved EDC’s solar
power projects, in Murcia,
Negros Occidental and Pres.
Roxas, North Cotabato, which
are now in the predevelopment
stage.
For the third approved
project, in Bago, Negros Oc-
cidental, EDC still needs to
submit additional requirements
related to its declaration of
commerciality and compliance
with the milestone approach.
The company is looking
to add some 100 megawatts
(MW) to 150 megawatts to
its solar power portfolio in the
medium term, officials said.
This, even as Philippine
players are faced with more
challenges, such as the P8.69/
kilowatt feed in tariff rate,
compared to their counterparts
in other countries.
“…We have to factor in
things that the others do not.
For example we have so much
tax and we need to build our
own transmission lines,”
EDC president Richard Tan-
toco said. “In other projects in
Chile, when they are built it’s
the government that builds to
them and the cost of land ac-
quisition is different.
EDC currently has a 4.1-
MW solar project in Ilocos
Norte in addition to its 150-
MW Burgos wind project
which has “one of the best solar
and wind resources,” according
to vice president for corporate
finance Erwin Avante.
Avante added that for
EDC, the challenge in solar
expansion lies in finding the
“perfect formula” of high ir-
radiance, a good site close to
a transmission line and cheap
land.
“The panels more or less
will give you the same level of
efficiency, so I think the battle
now is where we can harvest
more solar resources,” he said.

The West Valley Fault,
which runs through Quezon,
Marikina, Pasig, Makati,
Parañaque and Taguig cities
in Metro Manila, could pos-
sibly generate a magnitude 7.2
earthquake—almost as strong
as the magnitude 7.8 earth-
quake that hit Nepal in April.
The East Valley Fault, on the
other hand, could generate a
magnitude 6.2 earthquake.
The ICS, which is activated
solely as a response to disasters
or emergencies, allows users
to adopt an integrated orga-

Twenty years since its pre-
miere, the Olivia Lamasan film
has been digitally restored and
remastered and will be screened
on July 10 at the University of
the Philippines Film Institute in
Quezon City.
“Sana Maulit Muli” is the latest
film classic to be restored by ABS-
CBN Film Archives, alongside
“Maalaala Mo Kaya the Movie,”
“Nagsimula sa Puso” and “Madras-
ta.”
In the last two years, old films
that have been re-released in HD
included “Himala,” “Oro, Plata,
Mata,” “Ganito Kami Noon, Paano
Kayo Ngayon” and “Virgin People.”
In February, a trio of Vilma San-
tos movies also got special screen-
ings—”Anak,” “Kapag Langit ang
Humatol” and “Bata, Bata... Paano
Ka Ginawa?”

also restored more recent titles,
such as “Miss You Like Crazy,” “One
More Chance,” “Milan,” “Tanging

Foundation Inc. (KCFI) became
part of the Kapamilya network
after it was placed under the
wing of ABS-CBN in 2013;
this paved the way for the
Knowledge Channel’s inclusion
in ABS-CBN TVplus, making
it one of the go-to educational
channels for households with a
“mahiwagang black box.”
Prior to the move, the moth-
er ship of KCFI was SKYcable
Corporation, thus its original
name when it was established in
June 1999—SKY Foundation.
Other KFCI highlights over
the past 16 years:
Public school students are
introduced to an exciting new
way of learning as the K Chan-
nel goes on air five in November
1999.
In 2001, the K Channel
unveils two original series: “Ka-
saysayan TV,” for high school
freshmen which tackles history
and national issues, and “Pama-
na,” which focuses on Philippine

for Grade 10 teachers.
The K Channel, the flagship
project of Knowledge Channel
Foundation Inc. (KCFI), boosts
learning by providing students

In 2002, the students of
Buhisan Elementary School in

A year later, SKY Founda-
tion’s name is changed in order
to reflect the K Channel brand,
the foundation’s flagship project.
In 2004, the K Channel
schools host members of the
Global Philanthropists Circle,
who are in the country for a
learning visit. That same year,
the foundation raises more than
P8 million through Text Mo,
Pangarap Ko and Lakad Mo,
Pangarap Ko; the funds from the
former go towards connecting
five schools to the K Channel,
benefiting 6,006 students.
Television Education for the
Advancement of Muslim Min-
danao, or TEAM Mindanao,
in Datu Paglas, Maguindanao
marks the foundation’s entry
into the Autonomous Region in

As of May, more than 300,000
units of the box have been sold
in Metro Manila, North Luzon
and Cebu, catapulting the K
Channel into the consciousness
of thousands of home viewers.
“Bringing the Knowledge
Channel into the homes through
DTT, especially lower-income
homes, will help in the education
of the kids and the parents. So we
have tools for the students and
the teachers, and now we’ll also
have for the parents,” empha-
sizes Bautista. “Another benefit
of DTT is that it will be much

the KCFI president, who keeps
herself updated on the latest
education trends by reading edu-
cation-related materials as well as
leveraging their experiences and
learnings in the past 15 years.
Bautista notes that a re-
cent survey of 40,000 students
indicated that respondents
who watched the K Channel
“outperformed all other re-
spondents all across grade levels
by up to 45%.” Meanwhile, an
older study, conducted by the
University of the Philippines
in 2007, showed that K Chan-
nel viewers achieved as much

School Youth and Mature
Learners Alternative Learning
Institute, or OMLALI, alter-
native learning project.
This is followed by the
launch of KCh On-Demand
for the Alternative Learn-
ing System or ALS, and the

“K-High” to the Department of
Education (DepEd) in 2011.
In 2012, three major pro-
grams are introduced: Learning
Effectively through Enhanced
Pedagogies (LEEP), KCh On-
Demand for K-12, and the
Superintendents’ Leadership
Program (SLP) for education
leaders.
LEEP is officially launched
in early 2014 at the DepEd’s
Pasig headquarters, while the
SLP is now a requirement for
all superintendents and as-
sistant superintendents per a
DepEd directive.

that an improvement of .5% is
already cause for jubilation, ac-
cording to the Department of
Education (DepEd).
Since it was founded in
1999, some 3.9 million school
children in more than 3,000
schools from 63 provinces
all over the Philippines have
benefited from the learning
resources of the K Channel.
Taking a LEEP
“Marami pa pala akong hindi
alam, marami pa palang pwedeng
gawin,” says a Batangas teacher
in a plug for Learning Effectively
through Enhanced Pedagogies
(LEEP) on the K Channel.
Launched in 2013, LEEP
aims to prepare teachers and
principals for the full-blast
transition to the K-12 program
where an additional two years
of senior high school will follow
four years of high school.
“LEEP is developed to help
the teachers in the classrooms
to continuously hone their
craft, improve their leadership
abilities, and touch the hearts,
minds and lives of the students,
especially now within the con-
text of the many changes in
education,” Bautista says.
LEEP is mainly a teacher
training program, but also af-
fords principals who attend
the three-day activity a way of
keeping abreast of what their
subordinates are going through
on the ground.
To date, LEEP trainings
have been conducted in more
than 1,000 schools all over the
country.
While the benefits of physi-
cal and cosmetic upgrades such
as painting or repainting school
buildings and providing desks,
electric fans and other equip-
ment cannot be discounted,
“the most important thing to
really focus on is the teaching
and learning process,” the KCFI
president says.
She adds: “Without sup-
porting the teacher and the
students, 21st century educa-
tion will not happen the way we
want it to happen.”
LEEP, which has received
excellent reviews from the pro-
gram participants, becomes even
more crucial in view of the imple-
mentation of the Southeast Asia
Primary Learning Metric (SEA-
PLM) to align the curriculum of
the Southeast Asian nations.
“Among the first ones that
are going to test the SEA-
PLM are Laos and Cambodia.
We’re not ready because we’re
only going to K-12 now. But
then, countries like Laos and
Cambodia, they’re ready. So we
have to continue with K-12,
even with all its imperfections,”
Bautista stresses.
Meanwhile, with all these
things on its plate, the KCFI
chief looks to grow their volun-
teer base as one of the founda-
tion’s immediate goals.
“I liken it to the American
Cancer Society, where they have
a minimum number of employ-
ees but 300 volunteers all over
the place who take care of train-
ing and deploying, monitoring
and assessment,” she notes.
Another major KCFI un-
dertaking, the Superintendents’
Leadership Program (SLP),
is moving ahead following a
DepEd directive that all schools
division superintendents and
assistant superintendents must
go through the program. With
107 officials in two batches hav-
ing completed the SLP, and 52
in a third batch undergoing the
program, the foundation looks
to start five more batches by
2016, Bautista says.

news reporter, former news-
caster, and former college
teacher who received very
positive feedback from view-
ers, students and colleagues,
Calma views K Channel as a
“platform to help in molding
the hearts and minds of many,
many children into empow-
ered and productive citizens
who can and will fulfill their
dreams.”
Since 2009 when he
joined K Channel as content
manager, Calma has led a
team that would cull learning
competencies required from
the Department of Education
curriculum, for inclusion in
the programs to be produced
by K Channel. Each learn-
ing topic was translated into
a script, story boards, a video
with an episode guide for
teachers, aired on K Channel,
uploaded on KChOnline.ph
and transformed into an e-
learning module for interac-
tive sessions that may include
games, quizzes and other
study guides.
“We are happy to be
recognized for our work, for
example, in 2013 we won
the CMMA (Catholic Mass
Media Awards) Best Website
(kchonline.ph),” says Calma.
KCFI was also a CMMA fi-
nalist in 2013 for Best Adult
Educational Show for “Wow”
and in 2014 for Best Web-
site (kchonline.ph) and Best
Magazine Show for “K Now.”

is slowly being reworked to suit
household audiences.
Teaching millions
K Channel used to cater solely
to schools, so that its program grid
follows the school curriculum and
schedule. A learning topic shown
today will be replayed at a differ-
ent time tomorrow because it is
intended to be shown in different
classes or sections in school. But
according to Sedilla-Cruz, home
viewers are used to appointment
viewing, they expect programs to
be shown at particular times dur-
ing the day.

to our viewers both in the
schools and in households.”
Calma says social justice
is the primary value at work
when K Channel produces
content for all its platforms.
“Education is the equalizer.
It is necessary for inclusive
growth.” Sedilla-Cruz chooses
excellence as the primary value
for her. “We do not short-
change the audience. We must
give them what is rightfully
theirs.”
Focus on teachers,
pupils

for whatever challenge is fac-

there for a purpose. The ques-
tion is not why—which seems
burdensome—but what for,
which is more empowering.”

ers and principals. Aside from
DRRM, there are also electives
such as climate change adapta-

Several LEEP schools in the
metro have already taken the
two-hour 4K: Kaalaman, Kah-
andaan, Kaligtasan, Katatagan
course, which utilizes videos,
games, role playing, reporting
and poster making to drive its
message home.

the parent company, FPH, as

Two years later, Pagdagdagan
resigned from the parent com-
pany to work as assistant vice

in a new project of FPH—

Park (FPIP). It was a start-up
company and they were doing
the land acquisition, land use
conversion, park development
and selling of industrial lots
with minimal manpower

solutions Inc. The company
provides accounting, IT and
HR services to various Lopez
Inc. subsidiaries.
“In 2013, Group comptrol-
ler Perla Catahan retired and
I was designated as the Group
comptroller. This was the posi-
tion I held up to the time of my

114th birth an-
niversary.
Business ex-
cellence was close
to the heart of
the Lopez Group
founder, the value being one of
the cornerstones on which he
secured his companies.
Business excellence was
manifest in the way he and his
team ran Meralco, resulting in
its enviably above-par perfor-
mance during its Golden Age
in the 1960s. It was in the way
he anticipated and took ad-
vantage of opportunities that
opened up, enabling him to
expand his conglomerate at a
rapid pace.
And he walked his talk.
He never shied away from
showing his appreciation for

for internal audit profession-
als.
Pagdagdagan is an associ-
ate fellow of the Institute of
Corporate Directors, an orga-
nization focusing on the de-
velopment and enhancement
of corporate governance in the
country.
To enhance his exposure in
other aspects of business, Pag-
dagdagan took up courses and
attended seminars in risk man-
agement, ISO and IMS.
As head of the internal au-
dit and comptrollership group,
Pagdagdagan makes sure that
the values of integrity, hard
work, objectivity, fairness and
loyalty are part of his depart-
ment’s principles.
“When you implement and
monitor internal controls, good
governance, operational effi-
ciency and effectiveness, people
should see you as walking the
talk and not only doing lip ser-
vice,” he reminds his peers at all
times.
Testing the Lopez Values
In his more than 20 years in
the Lopez Group, there were
several instances, situations
and events that tested Pagda-
gdagan’s values.
“When we were putting up

but still I was able to hurdle
these with my reputation intact
and untarnished,” he recalls.
The challenges and the rela-
tionships established through
the years made Pagdagdagan
stay in the Group for more
than 20 years.
“The manner in which the
Lopezes treat their employ-
ees— fairness, generosity and

a lot to my long stay in the
Group,” he says.
Advice to newcomers
Pagdagdagan advises new-
comers to the Group: “Though
the younger generations may
have changed their practices,
values and priorities, integrity,
hard work and loyalty are the
enduring values that can see
them through in this business
conglomerate. It is a conglom-
erate where relationships are
nurtured and given significant
importance.”

returning to the assembly area,
