Lesson 1 Matter and Its Properties

Matter - anything or any material that takes up space and has mass.
- matter can be in any form or phase, be it solid, liquid, or gas.

Products are composed of materials and materials are compose of matter. Materials differ from
each other -- they differ in their properties, the products they make, their uses, and the ways on how we
can dispose them

Two classifications of properties of matter:

1. General properties - characteristics that are present in all kinds of matter
2. Special properties - characteristics found in some materials

General Properties of Matter:

1. Mass - amount of matter in an object
- mass of solids can be directly measured
- mass of liquids and gases cannot be directly measured
- the mass of liquids is equal to the mass of the liquid in a container minus the mass of
the container.

2. Volume - the amount of space occupied by the object

- measured in cubic centimeter or milliliter

Example:
What is the volume of a 10.o cm x 15.0 cm x 25.0 cm rectangular box?
Given: length (l) = 25.0 cm
height (h) = 15.0 cm
width (w) = 10.0 cm
Formula: V=lxwxh
Solution: V = (25.0 cm) (10.0 cm) (15.0 cm)
V = 3,750 cubic centimenter (c.c. or cm3)

3. Density - the amount of matter present in a given volume of substance

- Look at the picture on the right and see the density of oil and water.
- The floating or sinking of an object in a liquid depends on the densities of both the object and
the liquid
- Objects with a lower density than the liquid floats, and those with higher density sinks.
- Expressed in gram per cubic centimeter or g/cm 3
Example:
Find the density of a small cork block with a mass of 400 g and a volumen of 10 cm 3
Given: Mass (M) = 400 g
Volume (V) = 10 cm3
Formula: D=M
V
Solution: D = 400 g
