Helping girls who can’t afford prom dresses

2

I have continued to take on the task while I’m a junior this year to help girls who can't

afford to get a prom dress and feel fabulous and special for their occasion. I will be holding a

prom dress showing for the girls to come by Lunchtime to see what type of style they want and

take out the time maybe over the weekends or when there is no school days, I’ll hold a prom

dress somewhere around Kihei or other places. The reason why I have chosen to continue to this

I know not all girls can afford a dress. The average cost of a prom dress usually cost around

$400.00 and that is not including accessories, and shoes. Some girls on this Island who can’t

afford to go to prom because prom dresses, accessories, or anything prom attire is really

expensive now days. I just hope to touch someone, maybe by continuing this project or by heart

and make their day better.

Something that is really unique about this project is that I am continuing this project

from a past Junior who did this and helping other girls who can go to prom. Prom is such a

memorable night and everyone should get the chance to go. Some parents feel bad for their little

princess because they can’t go to prom just because they don’t have that much money to get their

dream dress. I may not have the girls type of dresses or dream dress, it’s just for me to help out

girls who can’t afford. Every girl should get a chance to go to prom, no matter what. It’s a good

memory for all teenagers you know, having a good time with your friends.

Driving Question

Q: How will I get other girls around the Island to donate their old prom dresses to me?

A: I could make a video and talk about my junior project, and my peers can post it on social

media or send it to the school.

Project Goal

My goal for this project is to raise as about 10 or 20 prom dresses I can get. Hoping that I can

get girls from different schools who can’t afford for any prom dresses. I hope to touch someone

else who can continue this for other girls out there who can’t afford any prom dress, or maybe to

touch someone by heart who can now go to the prom. Try to get any size or color prom dresses.

Just hoping that some girls will come to my drive and check out the prom dresses that was

donated to me. I really hope this project will go as smoothly as it can and hoping that I will reach

my goal of getting 10 or 20 prom dresses. Another goal for this project is just helping out those

kinda type of girls who are just really want to go to prom and enjoy.

Key Content Knowledge

4

Some girls might not have the money to get a prom dress or anything to go to prom. There

are some girls who’s family or she doesn’t work and they can't go to the one and only prom they

have in High School. Nowadays prom dresses are hard to get or find around this Island because

some girls want their perfect dress or it’s too expensive. On maui there really isn’t any cheap

dress I’ll say from hearing people’s cost of dress or prom attire things. I will have to learn that I

won’t get a lot of prom dresses, I’ll have to do one day at a time and have patients during this

project. I’ll learn that this is a good/better thing I am doing for the community and for other girl’s

who can’t go to the prom for some reason.

21st Century skills

The 21st century skills I will be using in this project is information skills, thinking and

problem solving skills, self directional skill, and especially communication skill. How will I be

using information skills by asking people for advice about this prom dress drive, how should I

show the prom drive, even researching and seeing how other people did this prom dress drive.

Just getting more information for me that I think will help me on this project. I will be using

Thinking and problem solving skills by figuring out what days I can do in a day where people

can donate and problem solving I will be having hard times through this junior project. The other

skill I will be using is self directional by self directing myself for time management for this

project and pretty much doing this project myself anyways. Last but not least is communication

skills, this skill I’ll be using it a lot of times because I will need to communicate with peers of

what needs to be done or if I need help in my project, it would be good/more helpful for me. It
5

will be hard with time management even communicating with my peers because time will fly by

fast and I wouldn’t even know it.

Limitations

The issues that I’ll be facing is not getting a good amount of dresses like maybe 10 dresses

just in one day. Time will fly by fast and I might just be off timing with everything with my

drive, etc. There will not be enough of a variety of sizes for girls. Maybe I won’t be getting

enough of prom dresses for girls. Another thing I could be facing is not a good amount of girls

will come to my prom dress drive which I hope that won’t happen. I plan not to stress about this

project and just be grateful that I have about a good amount dresses for me to show during my

prom dress drive. Trying not to over think about this prom dress drive or even telling myself that

I won’t get enough of dresses. I just have to think positive for my project and eventually

everything will just turn out smoothly.

Methodology

One of the ways I could be presenting my junior project is making a video of myself and just

talk about my junior project and when I'm done with my video I could post it on my mom’s

social media or I could give it to school. For me since I’m really not out there, being more social

with other people I could just make a video or make flyers and get permission if I can hang them

up on the school board. There are so many good ways for me to present my project. .

This site is talking about what my project is almost doing helping other girls who can’t afford

prom attire things. It talks about girls financial, peer pressure about prom, and when these people

start their drive for other girls. Of how much Belle of the Ball collected prom attire. Saying

things like how the owner’s of the Belle of the Ball had their experience in the prom dress drive.

It’s not just prom dresses, it’s even tuxedo too and that will help out the boys too. This site will

really be helpful for this project because it almost relates the same as my project but different. I

don’t do tuxedo’s, I mean I would but as of right now I think I would love to stick to the girls. I

can use this information I can see what the owners of Belle of the Ball did to accomplish their

goal to give out dresses to girls who need help.

Currently this video was made in 2017 by Good Day Sacramento. It’s about this lady name

Charmaine, she has two daughters of her own. In September, her oldest daughter had a prom

coming up and she realize how expense it was just for a dress and it came to her that she wanted

to create a prom dress drive for girls who couldn’t go to prom, not just for girls even for young

boys like ties or vest she was really thinking about girls and boys. Charmine doesn’t do just for

prom she also does wedding dresses. Even talks about how old the dress will be in between 2

years old, new, and gentle use. She specifically doesn’t just take long dress, she will take short

too. Charmine wants teenage girls will come look at them and say I love them and willing to use

this dress at the prom or even homecoming dances. This video is really helpful for my project
7

even doe it was 2 years ago. I think it will really help me to look outside the box not just to look

for long dresses even short too, I wasn’t really thinking about that. Girls might just want to look

for a short party dress.

● Resources/Materials Needed

The materials I would need for this project is having hangers to hang my prom dresses

and a rack. My resources will be my family, my teachers, and friends. For holding my

prom dress drive I have to ask Mr. Stubbs for permission to hold it on school property.

● Budget

I hope I won’t be spending any money for anything. Maybe for small little gifts or

something to give back as a way to say Thank you. When people donate to me their old

used prom dresses.

Faculty Interview

For my faculty interview, I interviewed Ms. Getzen on Friday September 6,2019. I was

explaining to her about my Junior Project. What are the benefits of this project, it’s to help out

girls who can’t afford dresses. Ms. Getzen gave me good feedback that helped me a lot like

making flyers for my prom dress drive so that amount of good people can come to my prom

dress drive. I like the idea that Ms. Getzen told me to ask Mr. Stubb’s if there is any storage on
9

the campus where that can really help me out. She thinks that it's a good thing to continue this

project because out there girls can’t go to prom because of the financial part. Since Mr. Stubbs

didn’t get back to me, I asked her if it was possible if she will be able to hold my prom dresses.

Even she gave me places where to go look for any prom dresses like rainbow attic or women

helping women.
