● Rate of Change

<EX> Calculate the instantaneous rate of change of f(x) with the respect to x at the given value
of x.

x
a) f(x) = 6- 5 x2 , x=2 c) f(x) = x+4 , x= -5

b) f(x) = 3x , x= 3 2x
d) f(x) = 5x−1 , x= -1

<EX> The volume of a ball is given by V(r) = 34 π r 3

a) Determine the average rate of change of volume with respect to the radius as the radius
changes from 10 cm to 15 cm.
b) Determine the rate of change of volume when the radius is 7 cm.

<EX> Explain how I.R.O.C can be obtained from A.R.O.C. You may make use of diagrams,
formulas or paragraphs.

● Derivatives

<EX> Write an equation of the tangent to each curve at the given point.

a) y = 2x - 2x , P(0.5, 1) c) y = 53 - 3x , P(-1, 7)
x

√x−3 1
b) y = 4 , p(1, -1 ) d) y = 2x
( x2 + 1 ), P( 1, 2)
√x

<EX> Find the slope of the tangent to the curve at the given value of x.
a) y = x5 − 4x3 − 2x + 7 where x = -2

b) y= 3x 4 + 12x3 − 9 where x= 6
● Velocity

<EX> A dragster races down a 400 m strip in 8 seconds. Its distance, in meters, from the starting
line after t seconds is s(t) = 6t2 + 2t .
a) Determine the dragster’s velocity and acceleration as it crosses the finish line.
b) How fast was it moving 60 m down the strip?

<EX> In a curling ice game, one team’s skip slides a stone toward the rings at the opposite end
of the ice. The stone’s position, s, in meters at t seconds, can be modeled by s(t) = 12t − 4t3/2 .
How far does the stone travel before it stops? How long is it moving?

<EX> The position-time relationship for a moving object is given by

s(t) = k x2 + (12k 2 − 10k ) + 3k , where k is a non-zero constant. Show the acceleration is
constant.
