Applicant’s Name: Ashley Sherrod

I have worked as the assistant principal at Lakeview Elementary since the fall of 2018. During
that time, I have had the opportunity to get to know Mrs. Sherrod very well. In the classroom,
she has established routines and expectations that help to create a classroom environment that
is safe and conducive to learning. She treats her students with respect and even when a
student is in crisis, she keeps a steady, calming tone when speaking with them. I have often
witnessed her helping her students to de-escalate. During these situations, she tries to remove
the student from the classroom to give the student privacy and then she gives the student time
to calm down before trying to help the situation. When she speaks to the student, she tries to
help calm them down as well as figure out what caused the student to be in crisis at that time.
In the classroom, she creates lessons that are engaging and prepare her students for the SOL
assessment. She makes sure that she is following the pacing guides for CHPS as well as covering
all of the SOL standards. Even when she is helping a student in crisis, she ensures that her
students are working. This is possible because she has well established classroom procedures
and her students know the expectations and can continue working while she is helping a
student.
Mrs. Sherrod has been a leader within the school. This past year she met weekly with our
Attendance officer to discuss attendance concerns. She contacted parents to discuss
attendance issues with them, which helped to decrease the number of chronic absenteeism
during the school year. She also helped to serve as a translator on numerous occasions. Her
skills in Spanish helped our parents to communicate with the teachers and staff at Lakeview.
Mrs. Sherrod is always willing to lend a hand when needed. This summer when the district
purchased a new reading series, she helped to clean out the area where the new resources
would go. At the beginning of this school year I had the opportunity to co-present a session
with Mrs. Sherrod at the district’s PD Fair. Our session topic was Classroom Management:
using class meetings and building relationships with your students. This topic was meaningful
to her because she knows how important it is to have good classroom management to be an
effective teacher.
Mrs. Sherrod is always looking for ways to improve her classroom or Lakeview to help not only
her students, but also all students.
