Chapter 1

THE PROJECT BACKGROUND AND HISTORY

Introduction

Public libraries were initiated back in ancient times. A library was a

building or room that contained collection of written knowledge like

books, journals, and periodicals, and also films and recorded music in

which people can read, borrow, and refer to. Library was not the term

used back then, it was repository which was a practice as old as the

civilization. They were known and used by Greeks, Romans, North Africa

and Middle East. However they did not arise in Europe and America until

18th and 19th century. According to an article in History Magazine, about

30,000 clay tablets found in ancient Mesopotamia date back more than

5,000 years. Archaeologists have uncovered papyrus scrolls from 1300-

1200bc in the ancient Egyptian cities of Amarna and Thebes and

thousands of clay tablets in the palace of King Sennacherib, Assyrian ruler

from 704-681bc, at Nineveh, his capital city. More evidence turned up

with the discovery of the personal collection of Sennacherib's grandson,

King Ashurbanipal. Then came the first public library for those with the

proper scholarly and literacy qualifications, that was founded about

300bc, the Great Library of Alexandria. The library held nearly 750,000

scrolls from different places of the world. During 1600s and 1700s were

considered the golden age of libraries in which it surged popularity and

grew more. The establishments of universities and the appearance of

state-supported collection helped the libraries to develop. In Britain, the

second largest library in the world was rebuilt by Sir Thomas Bodley in the

late 1500s. it was known as the Humphrey’s Library but was renamed as

the Bodlean Library. While the largest library was founded in 1759 as part

of the British Museum, the British Library. The earliest public library was

established at the London Guildhall in 1425. The first public lending library

was the Francis Trigge Chained Library in Grantham, Loncolnshire,

founded in 1598. The Public Libraries Act was passed in England in 1850,

legislating the universal instigation of a tax-supported library system. The

law required communities of more than 10,000 residents to support a local

public library through their taxes.

During World War II, libraries became important as it was the main

source of information. Libraries provide materials that offered a fair and

balanced reporting of the war abroad. It was convenient, efficient, and

readily available to disseminate information about the war.

In USA and Europe, public libraries started with a donation from many

private philanthropists like Andrew Carnegie and Benjamin Franklin. Like

other philanthropist, both Benjamin Franklin and Andrew Carnegie

realized that books, and the knowledge they provide, should not be for

just richness but for serving the public and for anyone who aspired to

learn. Because of this belief, they made books and money available to

the general public through their philanthropy.

Knowledge is the key to success, as they say. Library is one of the

sources of the knowledge people sought to have. According to Maria

Orendain, et al. (as cited by De Guzman and Santos, 2017), the quality of

elementary and secondary education is greatly enhanced by a

functional school library service. School library has been recognized as

one of the vital parts of a school system. It is one place where children

form basic concepts about the world, where dreams, aspirations, and

values are born and developed. But Philippines only had limited public

libraries. As of 2010, there were 155 academic libraries that were offered

but has no librarian while there were 1,224 public libraries that offered

1,400,000 volumes for its 1,595,194 users. There were 226 school libraries

available offering 432,000 volumes for it 13,464,123 users. There were a

total of 1,635 libraries that can be used with 8,588,851 volumes but has

16,826,049 users. Based on the given data, there was a 2:1 ratio of users

and books. Clearly, the number of people who used libraries

outnumbered the total of libraries in the Philippines.

Public libraries play fundamental roles in the society. They were

educational institutions that provide educational programs, such as

children’s and adult literacy programs, to improve the literacy levels

ofusers. They also support lifelong learning. Public libraries also play a role

in providing business resources and collections in their institutions in order

to respond to the world economic challenges. They are also essential to

the functioning of a democratic society by providing free and equal

access to high-quality information.

In this industrialized world where everything seems to be digital,

having a public library is not appealing to majority of people. They think it

is old class and outdated since there is an internet as main source of

information. Information in internet is uncertain to be true at all times. Fake

news is all over the internet, nowadays so some people prefer to go in a

library to seek information. Some decided to build establishments that

help people to acquire printed books, journals, and periodical such as

bookstores and coffee shops with books to be read yet not all of it

guaranteed to be useful in academic way. Some countries like United

States, South Korea, and Japan have bookshops that let people lend their

books for hours or even days. There are few establishments like that in

Manila only. Adapting it to other places will help providing people the

knowledge they needed.

Business name is important since it will be the one that catches customers’

attention. It should be unique, simple and easy to remember.

The proponents chose “KinaBOOKasan” as a business name to

assure customers that the business will provide best service with an

affordable price. The business concept of KinaBOOKasan is like a public

library which lets the customers borrow books and other printed materials

but in a reasonable price. But certain things will make it stand and that

includes its quality service, and professionalism of its personnel for its

customers. Also, there will be food and beverages available for the

customers who want to satisfy their hunger and thirst while in the store. The

proposed business location is located at Brgy. Real (Crossing), Calamba

City. This Barangay has known in Calamba City, Laguna for it has many

schools established in the place. Lots of students are spotted in this are

looking for convenience of having resources for their school activities.

Also, this place was practical for students in other places since the

transportation is accessible and cheap. This provides the business its target

market, not only students but other people like teachers and business

people. The location is urbanized for it has malls, public market, schools,

and business establishments around it.

Background of the Study

The selection of a good and feasible topic is the most crucial part of

conducting a research study. The proponents consider their interest,

which is to establish a book renting shop that will people especially

students.

When thinking about a topic, the proponents had a thought of where

they would get related literatures for their study. The proponents thought

of going to libraries but they had realize that there were no enough public

libraries in Calamba, so the proponents come up with the idea of

establishing a book rental shop.

They choose to place the shop in Barangay Uno (Crossing), Calamba

City because it is suitable for new business to grow. The place has many

establishments like schools, malls, hotels, and other businesses around it

that may need the service of the shop. Also, the place is easy to reach by

vehicles since there are terminals of jeeps, tricycles and even buses that

will help people from nearby barangays and cities to go to the place.

Methodology

The methodology will explain the methods and techniques used in

order to gather data. This includes research design, population and

sampling, research locale, respondents of the study, and sources and

data gathering procedure.

Research Design

This study utilized descriptive design because according to Cristobal

(2017), descriptive design is used to obtain information about the present

situation to gain understanding of a certain phenomenon. In this type, the

problem was being studied to provide a solution.

This design is fitted to this present study since the focus is providing a

solution for the lack of public library in Calamba which what the shop

offers to the people.

Population and Sampling

The proponents intend to study the perception of people about

libraries. In order to choose the sample participants, they have used the

ACCOUNTANCY, BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT STRAND| FEASIBILITY STUDY

simple random sampling. They were able to survey 200 respondents in

Calamba City.

Locale of the Study

The study was conducted around the area of Calamba City. The

school of the proponents is in this area so it will be more convenient for

them to conduct the study. Also, the population of Calamba City was

enough for a new business to start and grow.

Respondents of the Study

There were 200 respondents that were surveyed for the study. The

respondents were chosen using simple random sampling. They were high

school and college students from different schools in Calamba since

students are more likely to look for information for their school activities like

research or thesis making.

Sources and Data Gathering Procedure

The instrument used by this study to collect data was survey

questionnaire that has been approved by the research adviser, Sir

Florante De Leon, MBA. The proponents then asked permission to the

respondents for them to answer the questionnaire. The collected data will

be tabulated and will serve as the basis for the other aspect of this study

like marketing aspect.

Technical Aspect

The technical aspect is the discussion of the basic and operation

flow of the project. This factor responds to the technicalities and basic

structure of the proposed study. This includes service description, service

process, plant size and schedule, annual production capacity,

machineries, tools and equipment that will be used are enumerated with

their corresponding cost, production cost, plant location and layout,

building and facilities, utilities, waste disposal, and labor requirements.

Service Description

The proposed establishment which isKinaBOOKasan: Book Renting

Shop is a library-like shop that will let people lend books that they needed

in an affordable price. The difference of this shop is that it will let

customers bring the book outside of the shop for at most 3 days since

some public libraries restricted people from bringing the borrowed books

home. Also, the shop offers different services and incentives that will

benefit its customers.

The proposed business is named “KinaBOOKasan” was originated

from the Filipino word “Kinabukasan” which means tomorrow, another

day or future and “Book” since it is what the business offers. The business

name wants to imply to the customers that the business is concern about

their future by letting them borrow books in an affordable price which

help them to gain knowledge and that their future will be bright if they

continue to obtain information. Since Calamba was lacking public

libraries, the shop will offer them quality books, academic or

entertainment, that will help them in seeking for information they needed.

Service Process

The service process shows the procedures and sequences done

when renting a book from the shop. It starts from the registering on the

cashier up to returning the book.

were many fallacious articles spreading in the internet that can be

misleading and cause arguments.

Size of the Industry

According to the 2015 Census of Population of the Philippines, there

are 454,486 total populations Calamba City has which is 39.10% of it are

students. This data gives the proponents to have a look on how large the

market in the city. The growth rate of Calamba City is 3.14% per year. The

city has many publishing companies that can be the suppliers of books.

There are also publishing house on nearby cities rthat are accessible and

affordable. There are different bookshops in the city and it has a total of

30 bookstores. Since Calamba has large population and continues to

increase, it is an advantage for the business that many people will need

books and other sources of information for their works.

Customers are classified into their demographic, psychological,

behavioural information. For the demographic, age is categorized into 12

to 19 who are students, 21 to 40 who are teachers, and 25 to 50 who are

other professionals or researchers. The gender is based from the survey

that was conducted. The income are the average value a person can

have. The education were based from the classifications from the age. For

psychological, people tends to seek information everyday even the

simplest ones, that’s why they needed reliable and credible resources.

Information they gathered will help them gain knowledge and awareness

more. For the behavioural, people are mostly thrifty so they prefer to

borow or rent a book for a cheaper price rather than buying it then it will

be used just once. Facilities, price and availability of the books are

important to attract more customers.
