MS3120 Basic Heat Transfer

Problem 1
Consider the velocity and temperature profiles for a fluid flow in a tube with diameter of 45
mm can be expressed as

with units in m/s and K, respectively. Determine the average velocity and the mean (average)
temperature from the given velocity and temperature profiles.

Problem 2
In a gas-fired boiler, water is being boiled at 125°C by hot air flowing through a 5-m-long, 5-
cm-diameter tube submerged in water. Hot air enters the tube at 1 atm and 300°C at a mean
velocity of 7 m/s, and leaves at 150°C. If the surface temperature of the tube is 125°C,
determine the average convection heat transfer coefficient of the air and the rate of water
evaporation, in kg/h.

Problem 3
A 3.0-cm-diameter cylinder is subjected to a cross flow of carbon dioxide at 200oC and a
pressure of 1 atm. The cylinder is maintained at a constant temperature of 50oC and the
carbon dioxide velocity is 40 m/s. Calculate the heat transfer to the cylinder per meter of
length.
Problem 4
Water at 285 K and 0.25 kg/s flows through a Teflon tube (k = 0.35 W/m K) of inner and outer
radii equal to 10 and 13 mm, respectively. A thin electrical heating tape wrapped around the
outer surface of the tube delivers a uniform surface heat flux of 1900 W/m2, while a convection
coefficient of 25 W/m2 K is maintained on the outer surface of the tape by ambient air at 300
K. What is the fraction of the power dissipated by the tape, which is transferred to the water?
What is the outer surface temperature of the Teflon tube?
