of people who enabled me to gain much more than what the industrial aspects of the attachment
could have offered.
First, I would like to appreciate the Almighty God for the charitable time, good health, strength and
aptitude that enabled me to complete my attachment period.
Secondly, my gratitude goes To Rongo University academic staff that has imparted their vast
knowledge that has assisted me during my industrial attachment. Special thanks go to Dr. Francis
Olal, The HOD Physical Science who gave me the opportunity for attachment and Mr. Amuomo
Nickson, Head of Computer Science for his unwavering guidance in the field of computer science.

Thirdly, many thanks also go to the management and the IT staff of Tenwek Mission Hospital for
their unwavering support by giving me a chance to be part of them for period eight weeks. Worth
mentioning is the invaluable support and guidance that I constantly got throughout my industrial
attachment from the administration and more so from the IT department fraternity of that I had
more opportunity interacting with and for guiding and supporting me to gain experience in several
fields in both Software and Hardware and making the working environment conducive and friendly.
Such experience cannot be attained in an ordinary class environment and are largely interplay
between the class based inputs from my lecturers.

Finally, I would like to thank my loving parents for their support throughout the entire period of

COURSE SUMMARY

This report is compiled in partial fulfilment of Bachelor of science in Computer Science Degree at Rongo
University and it serves to provide an overview of what the student learned during the attachment period at
Tenwek Mission Hospital for the 8-week training. The sources used in writing this report includes;
observations of underwriting materials that has been carried out by the institution and reading from internet.
The report gives a brief description of the history of the institution and the functions performed. The
institution’s complete range of activities involved in IT department is mentioned. Institution’s hierarchy
chart and brief introduction of IT department where the student was attached is outlined. The duties that
were assigned to the student and the knowledge and skills that were acquired are explained in detail.
Evaluation of the Institution on SWOT analysis is explained at length at the end of the report including
conclusions and recommendations for the future of the institution.

CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION

Any student of Rongo University Undertaking Bachelor’s degree courses is required to undergo an
industrial attachment for a period of at least 2 months in a field relevant to their course of study. It is an
essential requirement for award of any undergraduate degree. The Attachment is under supervision and
intensive report compilation required to be submitted to the University on completion.

1.1 HISTORY OF TENWEK MISSION HOSPITAL

LOCATION

Tenwek Hospital is located approximately 200 miles southwest of Nairobi, Kenya. This highly-respected
Christian mission hospital offers primary healthcare to an area population of 800,000 and is a surgery center
for a region of more than 8.5 million people.

The hospital’s dedicated staff members – including permanent staff, short-term visiting staff, and medical
missionaries – care for some 14,000 inpatients annually and perform thousands of surgeries. In addition,
more than 120,000 outpatients are treated annually in the areas of dental care, HIV follow-up, intestinal
disorders, and injuries.

The spiritual care provided at Tenwek also results in thousands of annual


commitments by patients and their family members to follow Christ as Lord and
Savior.

Specialized care is offered in the areas of:

 Laparoscopy
 Endoscopy
 Diagnostic Radiology
 Physical Therapy

Tenwek’s surgical and educational facilities include five modern operating theatres, an obstetrics operating
room, and an extensive medical library with internet services. The hospital also sponsors significant
research into esophageal cancer.

MISSION STATEMENT
"Tenwek Hospital is a Christian community committed to excellence in compassionate healthcare, spiritual
ministry, and training for service to the glory of God."

ABOUT TENWEK
The hospital was founded in 1937 by missionaries from World Gospel Mission and has since grown to be
a leading teaching and referral hospital in the region and one of the largest mission hospitals in Africa. It is
a non-profit faith-based organization, a ministry of Africa Gospel Church and in partnership with World
Gospel Mission.

1935: Colonial Kenyan government granted Mr. Hotchkiss 10 acres at the Tenwek site. Mr. Hotchkiss
then turned the property over to World Gospel Mission. Robert Smith and his family moved to Tenwek
and began work on the earliest buildings. Mrs. Catherine Smith began treating illnesses, delivering
babies, and dispensing medicines from the new mission station. At the same time Robert Smith looked to
the falls as a potential power source. He dreamed of installing a hydroelectric plant.

1937: Gertrude “Trudy” Shyrock joined the team as Tenwek station's first fully trained nurse. Seeing that
the medical work was growing quickly and was a great aid in ministering to the Kipsigis people, the
missionaries at Tenwek began asking the board of WGM to send them a doctor.

1949: The light plant, donated by the McNeal family, arrived and in the same year an extra plot of land
was granted to the mission for building a hospital. The first permanent building on the new hospital plot
was the chapel. This chapel, located in the center of the hospital grounds is still in use today, and is a
testimony to the Christ-centered nature of Tenwek Hospital.

1959: Twenty-two years after the field began asking for a doctor, Dr. Ernie Steury and his wife Sue
arrived in Kenya along with their daughter Cindy. The clinic had grown into Tenwek Hospital. Proposal
for a new administrative building at the hospital. The building was completed in 1962 and was a great
improvement to the care that Dr. Steury and the nurses could provide.

1969: Dr. Steury’s burden as the only full-time doctor at Tenwek was relieved with the coming of Dr.
Bob Wesche. The addition of another full time medical doctor was a definite asset to the work of Tenwek
Hospital.

1981: Through World Medical Mission, World Medical Mission director, Franklin Graham, raised funds
for a major building project at Tenwek.Construction on the Johana Ng’etich Medical Center was begun in
1981 and the new ward was opened in 1985.

1983: Nurse Susan Carter and Dr. David Stevens set up and established the Community Health program.
Today the Tenwek Community Health program is a model for similar programs throughout the world.

1985: Barbara Pinkley completed her course to become a Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse.
Her new qualifications allow her to go on with co-establishing the School of Nursing with Dr. Mary
Hermiz.

1987: Tenwek School of Nursing opens under the first principal, Dr. Mary Hermiz.

1987: The completion of the hydroelectric dam supplies Tenwek with a sustainable, reliable power
source, drastically enhancing hospital function for years to come.

1991: Tenwek began training chaplains for hospital, military, and prison services through the L. Nelson
Bell Chaplains School - the only one of its kind in East Africa. This continues on today.

1995: Establishment of the medical internship program at Tenwek Hospital emphasized the importance of
training East African physicians as part of the Tenwek Hospital Mission.

1997: ASHA (American Schools and Hospitals Abroad) completes construction of twin buildings that
now house the eye clinic, laboratory, canteen, wound ward and support services.

2004: The Family Medicine Department was developed.

2005: The new operating theater and medical education building are completed, thanks to generous
donations from Samaritan's Purse and numerous private donors.

2007: Tenwek Mission Hospital began its General Surgery Residency Training Program, in partnership
with College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA), the Pan African Academy of
Christian Surgeons (PAACS), and Moi University.

2011: Tenwek hospital unveils a new CT scanner, donated by Toshiba, significantly advancing the
hospital's diagnostic capabilities.

2013: Tenwek Hospital fully integrated electronic medical records keeping system (Kranium Integrated
System).

2014: Installation of a second hydroelectric generator greater than triples the energy production capacity
of Tenwek, meeting the current and anticipated needs of the Hospital for the next 20 years.

1.2 Description of Activities

a) Formatting and installing software

 Installation of antivirus software (Kaspersky Anti-virus 6.0) and updating it.

 Installation of Operating system (Windows 7,10, 8.1 and XP).

 Installation and Activation of Microsoft Office application program(Office 2010,2013,2016).

 Installation of outlook and its configurations.

 Installing Browsers (Firefox, Google chrome) and configuring it.

 Installing document reader (Foxit reader).

 Installing Clear Canvas software for viewing X-ray images.

b) Hardware

 Upgrading computers for example replacing CMOS battery and adding RAM

 Setting up a computer in a new location

 Replacing faulty peripherals for instance keyboard, mouse, monitors, UPS and their batteries etc

 Blowing of PC’s and Printers and cleaning them.

 Crimping Ethernet cables using RJ45 and CAT 6 twisted cables.

 Configuring Ethernet cables connections using cable tester.

 Replacing toners on various type of printers

c) Client Desk

 Providing support to users who have problems in network connections

 Helping users with problems in receiving emails, downloading and printing email attachment files.

 Helping users with printer connection problems.

 Helping users to troubleshoot slow PC’s.

d) Networking

 Identifying problems in the network for example loose cables.

 Troubleshooting the problems of network cables.

 Resolving user login conflicts and IP address conflict.

 Configuring proxy settings.

 Monitoring the proxy server to ensure every user has access to the network

1.3 Interaction with the staff in the institution.

I was able to interact with a good number of staff from various departments. Through them I was able to
learnt a lot from them through observation and sharing with them. I was also able to learnt how to approach
and interact with both outpatients and inpatients of various levels of illness while solving Computer
problems in various inpatients wards and registration sections.

I did interact with the staff members from various hierarchical positions within the hospital. I had an
opportunity to share with some them more about the institution and general life activities. They were loving,
caring and trustworthy.

1.4 Challenges Encountered During the Attachment

 Limited access to company’s system; The confidentiality and controlled access of Navision system
through administration and access password for login limited the practice of the concept covered
during the industrial attachment.
 Limited period for training on the activities done by the Hospital and on the ERP application used.
 I never face much problem since I had earlier been to the institution before. Challenges could only
arise when I am challenged in solving a particular problem outside the ICT office for instance
network connection problem in registration section. In this found it a problem as more patients
could be waiting for registration and system is unresponsive.

CHAPTER THREE

CONCLUSION

The job scope and duties assigned focused primarily on hardware, software and networking. The work was
highly relevant to the field of study in Computer Science as it includes all computer aspects.
During the period of attachment, valuable knowledge was gained through active participation and
inquisitive learning. Knowledge on how to handle hardware devices for example repair, cleaning and
maintenance was acquired.
Use of Kranium Integrated Hospital System application software in Hospital was explored. Knowledge on
servers, LAN connection and IP phones was also gained.
Skills learned included build of good rapport with the staff and confidence in communication with senior
managers. This industrial attachment proved to have highly supplemented the student’s insight in the
computer science world. It was a beneficial and educating experience.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The Institution should consider providing the students on industrial attachment with temporary user names
to enable them practice on the ERP application.

The IT department should consider providing enough training of the activities and application used by the
Hospital.
