3rd SEM (MECHANICAL, CIVIL) SUB- FM&HM 1st INTERNAL TOTAL MARK - 30 TIME- 1.

15 hr

1. Answer all the questions. (2×5=10)

(a) State Pascal’s law?
(b) Define Capillarity phenomenon of liquid?
(c) How viscosity varies with temperature for liquids and gases?
(d) Explain briefly the stability conditions of floating & sub-merged bodies.
(e) Differentiate between Absolute, Gauge and Vacuum pressures.
2. Answer any TWO of the following. (10×2=20)
(a) A vertical gap 2.2 cm wide of infinite extent contains a fluid of viscosity 2 N-s/m2 and specific
gravity 0.9. A metallic plate 1.2m * 1.2m * 0.2cm is to be lifted up with a constant velocity of 0.15 m/s
through the gap. If the plate is in the middle of the gap, find the force required. The weight of the plate
is 40N.
(b) A cubical tank has sides of 1.5m. It contains water for the lower 0.6m depth. The upper remaining
part is filled with oil of specific gravity 0.9. Calculate for one vertical side of the tank:
(i) Total pressure
(ii) Position of Centre of pressure
(c) A solid cylinder of diameter 4 m. has a height of 3m. Find the meta-centric height of the cylinder
when it is floating in water with its axis vertical. The sp.gr. of the cylinder = 0.6.
