The Computer as the Teacher’s tool

In this lesson…..
We shall at the computer, but this time from another perspective the computer as the teacher’s
handy tool.
It can in fact support the “constructivist and social constructivist paradigms” constructivist
learning.

Constructivism
Introduced by Piaget (1981) and Brunner (1990).
They gave stress to “knowledge discovery” of new meaning/concept/principles in the learning
process.

CONSTRUCTIVISM
What it is?
 Connect to new knowledge
 Student centered
 Students learn how to learn

What is isn’t?
 Teacher centered
 Skills in isolation
What is isn’t?
 Teacher centered
 Skills in isolation
Characteristics:
 Collaboration
Things to remember:
 Start with a problem your kids find relevant
 Use interdisciplinary exploration
 Develop HOT tasks
 Use primary sources

Social constructivism
• This is an effort to show that the construction of knowledge is governed by social,
historical and cultural contexts.
Vygotsky
• The psychologist Vygotsky stressed that earning is affected by social influences.
• He therefore, suggested the interactive process in learning,
Dewey
• In addition, Dewey sees language as a medium for social coordination and adaptation.
• For Dewey, human learning is really human language that occurs when students socially
share, build and agree upon meanings and knowledge.
Summary of Two Learning Perspective

LEARNING CONSTRUCTIVISM SOCIAL

FRAMEWORK CONSTRUCTIVISM
Assumption Knowledge is Knowledge is
constructed by the constructed within a
individual social context.
Definition of Learning Students build their own Students build
learning knowledge influenced
by the social context.
Leaning Strategies Gather unorganized Exchange and share
information to create form ideas, stimulates
new concept/principle thinking
General Orientation Personal discovery of Students discuss and
knowledge discover meanings

The Computer’s Capabilities

• Without the computer, today’s learners may still be assuming that tedious task of low-
level information gathering, building and new knowledge packaging.

Based on the two learning theories, the teacher can employ the computer as a/an:
• An information tool
• A communication tool
• A constructive tool
• A situating tool

Information tool
• The computer can provide vast amount of information in various forms, such as text,
graphics, sound and video. The internet itself provide an enormous database from which
user can access global information.
• Along the constructivist point of views, it is enough for learners to download relevant
information using the computer as an information tool. Student can use gathered
information for composition or presentation projects as maybe assigned by the teacher.

Constructive tool
• The computer itself can be used for manipulating information, visualizing one’s
understanding and building new knowledge. The Microsoft Word computer program
itself is a desktop publishing software that allows users to organize and present their ideas
in attractive format.

Co-constructive Tool
• Students can use constructive tools to work cooperatively and construct a shares
understanding of new knowledge.
• One way of co-construction is the use of electronic whiteboard.
• The Computer-Supported Intentional learning Environments (CSILE) an example of an
integrated environment developed by the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.

Situating Tool
 By means of virtual reality (RS) extension system, the computer can create 3-D
images on display to give the user the feeling that are situated in a virtual
environment. A flight simulation program is an example of situating tool which
places the user in a simulated flying environment.
