UNIT TOPIC: Music of the Classical Period

UNIT STANDARDS: The learner demonstrates an understanding of characteristic features of


classical period music

LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
 MU9CL-IIa-f-1- Narrates the life and works of classical composers after video and movie showing
 MU9CL-IIa-f-2-Relates classical music to its historical and cultural background
 MU9CL-IIa-f-3- Explains the performance practice (settings, composition, role of composers/ performers
and audience) during classical period

LEARNING TARGETS: Visual and information literacy through a presentation of the intellectual
and cultural setting of the classical period vis-à-vis the political turmoil, war and discoveries that
shaped the artistic views of that particular era

Activity 1.
Sharing Insight
1. What is the political situation during that time, especially in Europe?
2. What are the roles of scientific discoveries and intellectual pursuits in the development of
the music of the classical period?
3. What are the developments in the field of musical instruments and how did it affect
musical composition of the era?

Activity 2
Teacher will start the class by introducing the two most famous figures of the classical period:
Franz Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and their impact on the musical
composition of their era. Students will watch some video snippets from the movie
“Amadeus” in order to have a glimpse of Mozart’s early life and career.

The students will watch modern-day samples of classical singing in order for them to
understand the ever-relevance of classical music

The students will listen to “Eine Klein Nachtmusik” and “Tuba Mirum” by WA Mozart

Mozart’s compositions, its difference from the other genres of music and its relevance today

Activity 6
Given the samples of musical technique of the classical period, the students (in groups) will
sing some sections of a piece of Mozart’s “Tuba Mirum” (under the direction and guidance of
the teacher as the vocal coach)
