SOP - Under Graduate Course

A brief family background

I, Vanshita Sethi, a student of ITL Public School, Dwarka -- New Delhi, believe, "Education is the
passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” Completing my
High School with a fairly decent score in Commerce, I plan to study abroad. The reason I choose to
pursue the undergraduate degree from a foreign university is the extremely competitive college
admissions in India. Not only is the process cumbersome seeking admission in India -- if you are
relatively less than the ninety per cent mark -- but admission in good Colleges has become a dream.
My results at the Higher Secondary does not decide my future. It is not as if I am not intelligent, a
fairly decent but low score does not decide my future. Unrealistic admission requirements in Indian
universities and an extremely competitive college admission requirements made me decide to
pursue the subject of my choice in a foreign university as however, it is less cumbersome abroad.
This is what made me zero in on seeking admission in international Universities immediately after
High School much earlier in life. I have always dreamed of being a part of the Universities in the
U.K or Canada. Sadly, but true, students who do not get into top colleges are left only with the
options of medium and low – rung colleges where the standard of education isn’t anywhere near
great. To avoid a situation in which I might have to pursue my education from an average college, I
choose to pursue the undergraduate education abroad at a renound and high level university. Not
only are the admissions comparatively easier than what they are at top/medium level universities in
India, but the standard of education at a medium level university abroad is generally much higher
than what it is at a medium level university in India.

The inspiration to seek studies abroad came from my elder sister, an expert in Mandarin after a
course she persued in Chinese language, in China, as well as a Bachelors Degree in Economics,
indigenously, and currently working in Snapdeal. Coming from a business family my aspirations for
studying abroad do not look frivolous as they would be adequately financed by my affluent parents.
coming from a well established business family, going abroad for Undergraduate studies is not a far
fetched dream.

Also, having a background of a school in India that has an edge over other schools academically,
my proficiency in English language cannot be doubted. The subjects: English, Hindi, Science,
Maths, Sanskrit and Computer Science brushed my skills in English language, as English remained
the medium of instruction in school. However, it might look insipid that I intend to persue media
and communication in international universities. But I have a reason to feel hat I will excel in it. My
interests and hobbies have always centered around speaking, writing, and reading. The passion for
writing developed early in life and I did put it to practical use by doing the 'Times Of India' --
internship. With writing came the art of speaking and the zeal to thrive in every environment it. I
also voiced my opinions often through blogs or plain speaking. I have always enjoyed public
speaking and the confidence that I showcase substantiates the fact. I also feel I catchthe eye of many
that goes for my gregarious personality, very important for a Pro student abroad.

University of Leads UK, the Cardiff College UK and UBC and Simon Fraser University, reign
high on my priorities. Although Canada is more people friendly and safe, I find U.K. to be more
enterprising and hence I put it on top of my list of places as well. According to the latest QS World
University Rankings, Cardiff is ranked in the top 50 for Architecture/Built Environment,
Communication and Media Studies, and Psychology; and ranked in the top 100 for Accounting &
Finance, Geography, English Language & Literature, Sports Related Subjects and Pharmacy &
Pharmacology. while The University of Leeds, established in 1904, is one of the largest and oldest
among the Higher education institutions in the UK, renowned globally for the quality of its teaching
and research.

By listing in the international academic Colleges, living experiences there will instill and help build
global competency, grow my social and professional network, or even make me learn a new
language. While many American universities have a widely diverse student body, a degree from a
university abroad has the added value of directly building global network and hence global
placements as it is believed that candidates having an international degree are able to impress the
employers because of the kind of experience they have gained while studying abroad. Therefore,
going abroad for studying is my preferred choice as it enhances the chances of getting good career
opportunities influenced by their desire to live and work abroad. The most common reasons due to
which Indian students choose to pursue their undergraduate degree from a foreign university.

I chose media and communication because my talents and skills have a direct link with it. For
example Public Relations is a very attractive option especially if I am able to represent companies
where my commerce background it can be best utilized. Furthermore, Media and Communications
course will broaden my horizons and will give me an edge in the long run. It may sound highly
peculiar to pursue a course that doesn't have a direct relation to the subjects I studied in High
school. But to be very honest, speaking and voicing out my opinions have always given me an edge
over others. I can easily pursue any career option related to commerce but I choose my talents over
everything else therefore media and mass communication The most obvious career pathways for
Media and Communications graduates is work in film, television, radio and other types of
journalism. Other career options may involve working in publishing, local government, marketing,
public relations, theatre , teaching and education.

In the list above lies my future goal, but it's very early for me to comprehend now but a versatile
course opens a wide range of career options to choose from. But this is what studying Mass
Communication in Foreign University studies help me achieve. I know that Universities have
several applications but I sincerely hope my intent and future aspects were clear and determined.
Therefore, I will look forward to being studying at the College of my choice thiss Fall, as I believe
it is the best step to grow.
