STEP 2 TEST DATA FOR MATERIALS
a. Cement used OPC Grade 53 coforming to IS:-12269
b. Specific gravity
Cement 3.15
Coarse aggregate 2.7
Fine aggregate 2.6
c. Water absorption
Coarse aggregate 0.50 %
Fine aggregate 0.80 %
d. Free (surface) moisture
Coarse aggregate 0.065%
Fine aggregate 0.41%
e. Sieve Analysis
1 Coarse aggregate 20mm down
2 Fine Aggregate Conforming to Zone II of Table 2 (IRC:44-
2008)

STEP 3 DESIGN COMPRESSIVE STRENTH FOR MIX PROPORTIONING

The target average compressive strength, N/mm2 at 28 days is
f’ck = fck +1.65 x s (Degree of control: Fair to good)
= 48.25 N/mm2
(taking standard deviation as 5N/mm2 from Table-3 of IRC:44-2008)

1
The design flexural strength using IS:456 relationship fcr = 0.7 x sqrt(fck) = 4.86

2
STEP 4 SELECTION OF WATER-CEMENT RATIO
Based on experience, we adopt water-cement ratio = 0.36
0.36 <0.5 Hence OK
STEP 5 SELECTION OF WATER CONTENT
From Table 5 of IRC:44-2008, water content for 20 mm aggregate = 186 kg/m3 at
W/C=0.5

As superplastisezer is proposed to be used, the water content can be reduced from 20% to 30% as per
para 7.2 of IRC:44-2008

Assuming 20% reduction, water content equals to 186x0.8= 148.8 kg

= 149 kg (say)
STEP 6 CALCULATION OF CEMENT CONTENT
Water-cement ratio = 0.36
Water content = 149 kg/m3
Cement content = 413 kg/m3
Minimum cement content as per MORT&H 5th Revision, 360 kg/m3< 413 kg/m3
Hence OK
Maximum cement content as per IRC 15-2011, 425 kg/m3> 413 kg/m3
Hence OK
STEP 7 PROPORTION OF VOLUME OF COARSE AGGREGATE AND FINE AGGREGATE
From Table 6 of IRC: 44-2008, volume of coarse aggregate corresponding to 20 mm size aggregate
and fine aggregte grading zone II is 0.62 per unit volume of total aggregate. But. Since actual water-
cement ratio adopted is 0.36 the ratio is taken as 0.648 to reduce sand content (as per Note 3 of Table
6, IRC:44-2008)

Volume of fine aggregate = 1 - 0.648 = 0.352 per unit volume of total

aggregate

3
STEP 8 MIX CALCULATIONS
a. Volume of concrete = 1 m3
b. Volume of cement = 0.131 m3
c. Volume of water = 0.1488 m3
d. = 0.004 m3
Volume of
superplasticizer @
1.2% by mass of
cementitious material

e. Volume of all in aggregate = 0.716 m3

f. Mass of coarse aggregate = 1252.7 kg/m3
g. Mass of fine aggregate = 655.3 kg/m3
STEP 9 ADJUSTMENT IN WATER CONTENT
Extra water for coarse aggregate= 6.26 kg
Extra water for fine aggregate= 5.24 kg
Actual water required = 160 kg/m3
STEP 10 ACTUAL PROPORTIONS
Cement = 413.00 kg/m3
Water = 159 kg/m3
Superplasticizer= 4.96 kg/m3
Fine Aggregate= 649 kg/m3
Coarse Aggregate= 1246 kg/m3
