Grammar: Adjectives vs. Adverbs
Lesson aims:
1. to read fluently a text in English;
2. to extract requested information from a text;
3. to practice adverb formation from adjectives;
4. to solve exercises through a game.
Materials: textbook, worksheets, flashcards, ppt game.
Methods: conversation, explanation, example, role-play, reading, exercise.

Stages of the lesson

ORGANIZATION
* T greets the Ss and checks if there are any absentees. (Time-2 min.)

ACTIVITY 1(Warm-up)
AIMS: - to create a pleasant atmosphere for the English class
- to get Ss ready for the next stages of the lesson
MATERIALS: a handout with some adjectives and their antonyms
METHODS: conversation, matching, speaking.

PROCEDURE INTERACTION TIMING


T sticks on the blackboard a handout and their T-Ss
antonyms and asks Ss to take turns and match the Ss-T 5 min.
adjective with its antonym.

ACTIVITY 2
AIMS: to read fluently a text in English; to extract requested information from a text.
MATERIALS: textbooks
METHODS: conversation, reading, role-play

PROCEDURE INTERACTION TIMING


* T asks Ss to open their books on page 98, recognize T-Ss
the characters in the image and describe them. Ss-T 18 min
* T reads the dialogue on p. 98 aloud, with intonation

* Ss have to read the dialogue. They will change roles T-Ss
and form new groups.
* Then, Ss must answer the text-related questions -role-play
from ex. 2/p. 99.

ACTIVITY 3
AIMS: to teach adverb formation from adjectives;
MATERIALS: pictures
METHODS: conversation, explanation, example

PROCEDURE INTERACTION TIMING


* T asks the Ss to describe Spike’s mood in one word T-Ss
(she shows them a picture in order to guess the word Ss-T
easier) and make a sentence with that word – e.g. 10 min.
Spike is angry.
* T asks Ss what is angry as part of speech -> Ss
answer that angry is an adjective because it describes
a noun. T elicits another examples of adjectives.
* T sticks on the blackboard the an image with the
following sentence: He slams the door angrily. and
asks Ss what is the word angrily as part of speech?
They conclude that angrily is an adverb because it
describes the action (the verb). T elicits another
examples of adverbs in sentences.
* Ss write the formation rule for the adverbs.

ACTIVITY 4
AIMS: to practice adverbs formation from adjectives
MATERIALS: laptop, ppt game
METHODS: explanation, conversation, example

PROCEDURE INTERACTION TIMING


* T tells the Ss that they are going to play a very -frontal 12 min.
simple game to practice what they have learnt.
* Ss will take turns and come in front of the class and
choose the right adverb to complete some sentences.

ASSIGNING HOMEWORK
* T tells the Ss to make 5 sentences using the following adjectives and their adverbs: loud,
bad, happy, sad and tidy. (Time-1 min.)

PRAISING THE Ss
* T praises the Ss and gives marks to the most active Ss. (Time-2 min.)
