John Taulo BSc (Mech. Eng), MSc (Mech. Eng), PhD (Mech.

Eng)
John Taulo received his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of
Malawi, in 1994, the Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of
Cape Town, South Africa in 2008, and his PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering from
Stellenbosch University, South Africa, in 2017. He is currently the Head of Energy Resources
Department Fellow at the Malawi University of Science and Technology. He lectures
courses in sustainable energy systems (solar, wind, hydro, biomass). His current research
interests include energy efficiency, energy modelling, rural energy consumption, and
energy-related CO2 emissions. He has more than 20 years’ experience in research and
technology development & transfer, with particular emphasis on the design, construction,
testing and evaluation of agro-processing machinery, renewable energy technologies;
design, production and maintenance of food processing machinery as well as in design and
construction of farm, road and rail transport equipment.
Dr Taulo has undertaken consultancies for many international agencies, including UNDP,
the World Bank, and FAO. In addition, he has acted as project leader for various research
projects including the design and development of Kavuzi Micro hydro scheme; design and
development of ‘LAWI’ institutional stoves; capacity development in manufacturing of
treadle pumps in Malawi; Technology Strategy for Sustainable Livelihoods- Ndawambe
Pilot Project; Piloting of Innovations for Poverty Reduction. His published work is included
in refereed international journals and conference proceedings.
