Problem:

Correlations in 1D Hard rods:

Consider a system one-dimensional (1D) hard rods, of unit length (σ = 1), so that
the packing fraction and the density are equivalent (η = ρ) and we measure the distance
x in dimensionless units. The direct correlation function takes the form
1 − η |x|
c(x; η) = − , for |x| ≤ 1,
(1 − η)2

and c(x) = 0 for |x| > 1. The total correlation function h(x) = g(x) − 1 should be related
to c(x) by the Ornstein-Zernike (OZ) equation
Z ∞
h(x; η) = c(x; η) + η dx′ c(x′ ; η)h(x − x′ ; η) =

where the last lines present it as the first three terms of an expansion in η.
i) Write the expansion of c(x; η) in powers of η as c(x; η) = c0 (x)+ηc1 (x)+η 2 c2 (x)+...,
getting the expression of the functions up to c2 (x).
ii) Plug the expansion of c(x) into the OZ equation to get the formal expresions for
the functions ho (x), h1 (x) and h2 (x) that give h(x; η) = h0 (x) + ηh1 (x) + η 2 h2 (x) + ..., in
terms of co (x), c1 (x) and c2 (x).
iii) Get the explicit forms of ho (x) and h1 (x) (optional: get also h2 (x)), taking care
of the different analytic expresions that appear for |x| ≤ 1, 1 ≤ |x| ≤ 2, etc..., to draw the
function h(x; η) up to that order, over the full range of x.
iv) Get the Fourier transform ĉ(q; η) of the direct correlation function and use OZ
equation to get the Fourier transform of h(x; η)
v)Optional, numeric: Calculate the inverse Fourier transform of ĥ(q; η) to get h(x, η)
for η = 0.1, 0.5 and 0.95
